Trying to pick the right server.

I've recently returned to the game. I haven't played in years and I am starting over fresh as I'm practically a know-nothing newbie.

I made a character on Ragnarok but people keep telling me to play on different servers for different reasons. It's left me very confused. I just want to play on a friendly server a newbie like me can get help when needed, and also do some end game stuff when I get there. I've been told if I want to do end game content then Odin is the server to go, but they are all hardcore. Phoenix I've been told is where the friendly people are. Apparently Omega should be avoided because apparently you are all ERP'ing all day every day.

Does server actually matter? All I'm wanting is a friendly FC to help me learn the game and help out. I would like the option to do end game content when I get there, though I don't know if my RL schedule will allow for scheduled events as I will be returning to uni and work in a few months.

Honestly, there's really no such thing as "playing on the right server" from a persons mind set. I have a few toons on Midgardsormr, Cactuar, Gilgamesh among some other servers. If you're specifically looking for endgame stuff to hop back into after grinding out tomes and gear, there are select servers tailored for endgame (although a lot of new people on them as well). RP servers where most of the current players will be for Role Playing, among non RP players. New players or returning players can come and go as they please. It also depends on your current time zone, as each data center is specific to north america, EU, etc too and whether people will be up at the time you are (prime) or not. If you're in north america, the data center recommended would be any of the current listed in Aether Data Center. If you're ever on Midgardsormr, our FC is always actively looking for members, but welcoming and helping members too! Don't be a stranger! If you have any other questions, let us know here on the forums! Hopefully you find something or an FC to your liking! Happy hunting!

My suggestion? Just keep playing on your server.

Now if by end game stuff you mean savage raids, some servers have definite advantages and disadvantages. But if you just mean normal raids, some trials, etc... it still probably won't matter. There might be some other cases for moving, like if you're specifically hunting for an RP community or something.

But mostly? It doesn't matter. You'll find friendly people on any server. Don't move if you don't want to, and you don't need to worry about that question right now. Just play and have fun. Good luck out there.

What mostly matters is when the prime time is or if your server seems to lean towards a certain time zone over others. Like Midgardsormr for example has many east coast players but a lot of statics tend to favor the west coast time zone starting around 10pm est or later.

Thanks for the answer. I am happy here just leveling. I have met some nice people so I don't really want to move. I would like to try the hardest content I can in the future but I don't know if I'd be willing to swap servers for it. I would be shocked if there was nobody here doing it. I would have thought with Ragnarok being a legacy server it would have been busy!

When it comes to end game stuff server doesnt matter much. The duty/party/raid finder tool you use to put together groups works not only for the players on your server, but all the servers in the same data center. So if youre on Ragnarok and the more serious raiders are on Odin then the tools in place will allow you to group up with them. You can even join a Cross-server Linkshell to stay in contact with friends you make on other servers in your data center. Along with that, later this year a "world visit" system is going live, that will let you visit your friends servers in person without leaving yours. So all your home server is really determining is which FCs you can join, where your house is(if you have one), and where your retainers are selling things.
