That's really a problem with the MMO scene in general: it's too political.

That said, I'm not interested in Square Enix following the beat of WoW's drum. If I wanted to play WoW, I would. But I don't, because games of that type (this includes WoW, EQ, LotRO, Rift, etc.) feel hollow and lifeless to me.

Is FFXIV any better? Maybe, maybe not. I get a better sense of freedom out of it, and as empty and lacking in content as it is, it at least seems a bit more like a world, in my opinion.

I'm not saying SE should totally isolate themselves from looking at what works/doesn't work in the MMO market, but if we want any real progress in the genre, companies are going to have to start thinking for themselves again (and, say what you will about FFXIV's current state, at least it's different).
Well said, I couldn't agree more. One of the greatest things about this game is its uniqueness, take that away and its just another clone with no purpose.
