More like the genre is slowly stagnating, not because of Wow either.

Its prevelant if you take away wow and just FFXI. FFXIV need to have FFXI insert feature here, the sad fact is most ppl just want FFXI with new graphics. People don't want change or anything new, it's why a game like RIFT does so well. The game isn't special but it's exactly the same as people are used to. Human imperfections are what cause these problems.

"I dislike how they pretty much killed off the social aspects of the game by making it solo heavy in the part that matters of an MMO which because WoW got popular and sparked interest in the mainstream crowd in the west, became the "standard" for MMOs to follow, thus basically killing off what MUD/MMOs used to be about. "

I played WoW for a year on 2 of the biggest (well only) RP servers with RP on it. WoW has several RP servers and pvp-RP servers. And no one really rps very well. Everyone chooses off lore things, or does ERP and tries to justify it.

Getting for help or getting friends to join you on quests is non existant. Even my boyfriend who was farther then me said, "why bother you can solo" I just didn't want to play alone.

That mentality is leaking into ffxi and ffxiv. It shouldn't be weather you can/can't solo. It should be about the fun of doing it with friends or ppl who end up your friend. I much rather do things with others (solo able or not) then to play an MMO by myself.

I just started WoW about 2 hours ago to see what all the fuss is about as I had never played it. Don't think I will be giving FFXIV up for it as I am so used to the graphics of FFXIV I was really shocked when I started WoW, it's a big difference lets just say that ^^

I am enjoying it I guess, got to level 6 and have just been running around doing quests trying to get to grips with the basics for now. Strange not being able to change class unless you make a new character, I wonder if that is why so many people think the whole weapon=class thing is good in FFXIV because they think that is the only way to be able to level every class/job on one character. I don't think many realise it was something we could do in FFXI, well not on the fly but from any Moogle so easy enough.

One thing I do like is being able to set all my graphics and resolution setting in-game that is so much better, hope it is something SE can get worked into FFXIV as it saves a lot of time.

    Well I got 10 days free trial so it should keep me occupied until the servers go back up for FFXIV at least, hope they go back up soon though I miss my Archer ; ;

    WoW end-game was extremely easy
The difficulty has fluctuated quite a bit, and currently it is legitimately hard. In the WoTLK not so much. XI on the other hand is no longer "hard" with the level cap raises.

With reactionary skills and platforming mechanics it is much easier for Blizzard to create gimmicks that make the content difficult. SE showed that they can also make gimmicks of their own to create challenging content in a different way (like Salvage) but at the end of the day WoW uses it's gimmicks more often. SE adds as much content as it feels is needed to keep the playerbase around, Blizzard has to do a lot more than that.

It is easy to level in WoW, no doubt about that.

i only payed for wow for 6months, only played for 2months. it was on burning crusade exp. at the time. the zones felt empty by that time, few people i'd run into probably were people leveling second+ toons cause i'd never see them again. i couldn't make it to end game b4 staying with ffxi. as i played it ffxi stared at me and called to me everyday lol.

i did play warhammer for a good 2years though, them dungeons were a joke to me. (is why i'm worried that ffxiv endgame sticks with this 4-8man party for dungeons) but that game had pvp to make up for it, least at start then pvp was shit too.

also weather most of u wow players have played wow for very long time, i picture any clans/guilds a group of peoples, people that jump around on mmo's alot. get bored quick and quit and run to the next mmo to play threw. and in that, if i've picked my mmo it's probably gonna last for 5+ years like it did in ffxi. want to stay it's hole life cycle. i've been in a clan b4 and they go threw mmo's like they were m&m's. they like walmarts, build and then abandon for it to die.

besides if a mmo can't afford cutsceens and real story mains, and seperate story with there grind i really don't want anything to do with it, less i'm there for there pvp. pve with these types of game play can eat me. i want to feel like i'm playing a rpg with shit loads of other players, and that is mostly the story for me. i hate reading boxes, i find i played 2years of warhammer and like 6toons to max and had not real feel of any story. i knew the basics but that is bout it, never read the boxes. i think what i knew was from the months prior to it's launch lol. same goes for the 2months in wow, i can't recall a thing from it, where as i can almost recall half or more of the ffxi missions and even the side quests. (lots of them and lot were memorable enough to remember)

don't know enough bout wow in any other way to make any judgments, maybe if i played it from launch i'd like it. but i hear most that did at launch don't now so that says something. i can say not a mmo i've played has topped ffxi yet. i was hoping for ffxiv to be the one but they going more wow/casual then i'm ever gonna be able to enjoy i think.

To those who don't like the WoW player base, guess what. Port Jeuno shout chat is the new Barrens Chat.

Yes I do have a My Little Pony sig because I'm not a complete loser who lives in his own little world, proclaiming something is stupid because I say so.

WoW's not so bad. I, like many of the people in this thread and that remain on this forum, was a FFXI player who swore off WoW for years. I tried it a bit after BC came out and quite enjoyed myself for a bit, but only got to lvl30 before I went back to FFXI. I got bored with FFXI a year or two later and came back to WoW, and this time leveled all the way to 80 in WoTLK, and the endgame was what I found much more satisfying than the grind to level. Incidentally, this also made my already weary attitude towards FFXI's grind turn into a complete refusal to put up with hours of boring tedium anymore.

I think what a lot of FFXI players do is confuse tedium with difficulty, and they are far from the same thing. Yes, it's quicker to level in WoW, but that means you get to the beefy endgame sooner. It's more satisfying than guild war's near-nonexistant leveling curve but much more forgiving than FFXI's until recently, or FFXIV's post-20 curve. Yeah, it takes forever to get anything done in FFXI's endgame, but it often isn't really hard, it just takes forever. Yeah, you get gear more easily in WoW, but by the same token you don't spend weeks or months doing endgame and have very little to show for it. This helps motivate you to stay engaged. Aside from this, I've had to put up with much less drama due to the need vs greed lotting rules, it's much easier to put together a group for large scale pve stuff, the gui is great and heavily customizable, you have better methods of travel with flying mounts, and you have a legitimate sense of power after you get geared.

It's not perfect. The graphics will make you want to pull your eyes out if you're used to FFXIV, people can be quite annoying (but they are in any online game), people think gear>skill even more than FFXI, and until recently there wasn't much of a unifying storyline for the quests you were doing.

Still, despite what grouchy people on this and other MMO forums may be, WoW has controlled more than half the market singlehandedly for 6 years for a reason, and the reason isn't that the players are all "stupid sheep." Blizzard often takes the best ideas from other games and their mod community and implements them into their game. Some call it "stealing" but MMOs borrow from each other all the time. The trick, I think, is to learn the lessons from WoW and other MMOs and put an FF twist on them. And we, as a community, need to stop rejecting ideas from other MMOs simply because they're not FFXI and embrace good ideas when they show themselves. I think Yoshi-P understands this concept, but he may be swayed by a vocal minority on this forum, and that'd be bad for the game.
