Side quest are designed to be soloThey suffer from two problems causing them to be so bad that I can see.
They are unimaginative.
They are tailored to be "accessible to all" which makes them "fun to no one".
Most quests should either be tailored to challenge a specific type of player in my opinion (solo or group, for that level it needs to be challenging).
Quests that are supposed to be inclusive need to be creative to hide the fact that they offer no challenge through gameplay mechanics by having unique/fun objectives. FFXI has plenty of examples of this. Obviously this is more difficult to accomplish though, so the majority of quests should simply strive to be challenging even if that limits their "accessibility".
Company quests are supposed to be done with a party, ie killing Ifrit, moogle and the prequest stuff.
Comapnies are still fairly new we have to give them time to populate the game with quests.
Same here, talk about quest grinding !!

The best quest system I've seen where you pickup a weapon in the forest that you just saw shining from far and starts talking about how mythical it is and then asks you to go find it's owner in the end of a dungoen so they both rest in piece.
I dunno. There's an NPC named Lonsygg (I think) in Gridania that has an amazing quest...
so u want to get on ur pug walk into ul'dah punch some1 in the head and knock them out, then throw them of the roof of the adv guild O.o i'm so telling the GM Poilce on u :P

Yes, yes they do. I recommend hitting enter faster to get through the dialogue.
A quest like this would be good ^^
very big and a good story and you see many places in the world
Not something you can finish in 30 minutes or less

I actually think they're quite well done and the story is rather interesting. I actually love the Dalamud event, they've made it fun with all the little hidden events too. There's a lot more to the whole 7th Umbral story arc than just what's in those GC quests, discussed or hinted at in other quests or even some of the seasonal events. Guess something's terribly terribly wrong with me though.I think bad content is worse than no content at all. I also think it drives players away more. At least people can hope that good content is on the way, while bad content makes the developers look inept.
These side quests are garbage, and so are the events like the Dalmund events. Does anyone enjoy them? And if you do, what the hell is wrong with you to like something that terrible?
Actually I play since Alpha testing.
I didn't actually want to have to give any specific ideas in how to innovate as I'm not a game designer and people are going to probably hold to an abstract example as something punctual. So what are the basic elements you want them to use?
For DoW classes their only basic element is to kill things and in the process of killing things, occasionally collect items. The side quests we have DO use these basic elements. The variation we have on this is either kill X number of enemies or kill a specific enemy (effectively what the DX:HR quest boils down to).
For DoH we have their basic element of crafting items, they have their leve quests (which are basically repeatable side quests) where their objective is to craft a certain number of specific items.
For DoL we have gathering, similarly to DoH classes, their leve quests focus in their abilities.
The side-quests might not offer anything different but then you have to work within the elements of what the game offers, and that's exactly what they do.
But the basics on XI are moving, clicking, emoticons, ridding on a chocobo, talking to NPCs and using skills.
There's plenty of things to do other than just kill certain amount of monsters.
And even when doing so, they could make us do it with a certain weapon or a certain spell.
We could be solving crimes, asking NPCs for statements and then testifying having to choose the right answers.
We could enter in funny coreographed street fights in which triggering the right emotes in the right order would win the match.
We could be having to reach certain place on our chocobos before an NPC does.
There's plenty of things we could do, which aren't big budget things. Just sticking to the game's basics.
