It's me again. I'm not just gonna drop this job I love because of Kaiten. My motivation to play it has in fact been shot several times in the chest, but 'life support' is technically still alive.
After hearing Yoshi P's reason of Kaiten making it difficult to design future abilities, and running through the new EX with it, I've come to the same conclusion. Job feels empty. When I'm focused on mechanics it isn't necessarily noticeable, but that's high-end content where I'm not paying attention to how cool I look; and even then, it still feels like I'm missing something. But, that's not casual content. In casual content, the job still feels bad. Empty. Hollow. It's missing identity after, I kid you not, a single button loss. Because that button was the job identity. Without it, Midare and Oga barely even register in my head. Even in that high end content I feel a rush when I Kaiten-iai. I know I'm about to do some good burst, and look good doing it. The lack of burst aside (and the coffin I was put in when my party consisted of a SCH, DRG, and DNC—meaning my 2min buff window literally did not exist) I don't even feel good doing my midare or my oga. It's just a soulless button I press.
Shinten is not satisfying to press. I'd argue we need an animation change for it, especially if it's going to be pressed every few seconds. It didn't matter before because you weren't mashing shinten between every button most of the time, and the job felt more satisfying elsewhere. Without Kaiten, satisfaction rests entirely upon that button you have to press between every GCD feeling good. Kyuten does. Shinten does not. Shinten doesn't flow into anything. It doesn't line up. Kyuten keeps the character rotation spinning. Shinten is, frankly, a janky-ass stab that clashes with whatever GCD you could possibly have pushed on either side of it. Kaiten-iai was the satisfaction. Shinten never has been, and now you rely on it every few GCDs to excite you. It does not.
My solution:
After running content for a few days I still stand by what I said. Kaiten needs to come back. In light of the issues that have arisen, having to design skills around Kaiten, I propose a very simple solution.
Kaiten only buffs specified weaponskills. We removed Enhanced Enpi from Meikyo. We can narrow the search to only Iaijutsu and Oga Namikiri for Kaiten to buff, and make it fall off if any other weaponskills are done.
Or, make Kaiten give you an enhanced iaijutsu/oga like other classes get. Pressing kaiten enhances the next iai or oga with the same effect that kaiten had before, or with the crit buff, or whatever the devs feel is necessary.
Weaponskills are free from Kaiten, and people remain happy. Address Shoha, Oga, and Tsubame button bloat like the community asks, and I see no downsides here.
