Correction: Melee doesn't have a radius to circle around.

The red target circle is merely a guideline that displays the boss' relative size. It's actually more important to determining when you'll go out of melee range than it is to hitting positionals. In reality, the boss has no actual size. Maybe it's a single pixel? I'm not really sure. The positional hotboxes just extend in a cone out from the boss' center, and the target circle just shows you a snapshot of that at a particular distance. You can still hit positionals when you're inside the ring. In fact, you can still hit them when your avatar looks like it's in the direct center of the boss hitbox. It's just harder to determine which side you're on. If you get used to it, you can use that center point to quickly cross to the other side of the boss and land positionals, or avoid positional boss attacks while barely moving. This is extremely useful for everyone from casters to tanks, and also makes healers happy.

A sniper class that required large distances from the boss would struggle with difficult positioning as was mentioned. One could give them BLM-esque low-cooldown dash skills to reposition on a whim, or have their rotations always have them running in a circuit around the boss.

But personally, I would hate that. Because as a healer, I know that job would miss almost all of my AoE heals. It would certainly not be there for things like Asylum or Cure III.
