As I've stated before, the hat is part of a gatherer's set. Just because it resembles what we know as a fedora doesn't mean it is one. Wide brimmed hats were always used for outdoor labor to shade the neck and face. I also stated that the world we've known (Eorzea) is changing at an alarming rate because of the increasing use of magitek and the introduction of new continents and cultures, so fashion will invariably change. So while fundamentally the world we've known is that of a medieval setting, it's starting to move through the ages of Cultural Enlightenment and the Industrial Age. Eventually it may make it to an age where people are free to wear what they please. It just depends on where the devs take it.

I'm not trying to dictate what people wear, just trying to point out that the world the developers created has it's own rules for men's and women's clothes for a reason. If the developer's had wanted all clothes to be unisex then all the clothes would have been unisex, but that's not what they wanted.

I really don't care what people put on their video game avatars because it doesn't affect my gameplay.
The reason women wear trousers is because they're a more conventional garment than a dress for combat. That's part of the fiction aspect of the game as women weren't traditionally in combat roles and since the game includes playable female characters, concessions were made. Also breastplates for armor were generally uniform with no female contours so that's another concession. The gatherer's gear are usually pants too, again for conventional means. Most of the non-labor, non-combat gear for women are skirts or dresses. I don't think I've ever seen a female character in a tuxedo though.

Hildebrand wore a dress - why can't other male characters?

I want to wear the kimono outfit from the gold saucer ; ; I have no problems with glamour being for all genders.

Ever since the Bunny Suit got ungenderlocked I was hoping this trend would follow into newer sets. But I suppose not. I'm quite saddened with how even the new hair for Ramza and Alma is genderlocked. The hair for the past recent patches were not so I am confused for this change. Mogstation Items I feel should not be genderlocked. Especially ones that have no other gender equivalent. You can make character faces that look exactly like Thancred or Yshtola and have their outfits. Does it really make sense to have their looks? Well no. And as such Glamour is just Glamour. Customization for the player because it is already unrealistic. It is a fantasy after all. What's important is player enjoyment and customization plays a huge role in that. You have to look at your own character almost the whole game, so it is important. Mogstation items are not only expensive but also many are character bound instead of account. So if they really want to make these outfits feel like premium items they should not be genderlocked. Being genderlocked restricts you creativity in many fronts and if you use a fantasia to be another gender you are locked out of that outfit. Rendering it useless. Many male npcs in the game are able to equip female only hair such as Estinien. Hildebrand also gets to equip a female only set.

Final Fantasy games has always had crossdressing, both females trying to look male or males trying to look female. Whether it be in FF7, Tactics, IV, V, The 4 Heroes of Light and even this game. But there doesn't seem to be a clear rule on what is allowed or not in here. I'm not expecting Square to go back and ungenderlock everything but new sets may they be feminine or masculine in nature should not be genderlocked. They only limit uniqueness.

There are those who say you get more variety with genderlocked items but I say you actually get less. Just because a new set is for males only doesn't mean all males want to wear that set. They will stick with their old attire because the new set won't fit their taste. They're not gonna be like "Oh a new set came out I guess I have to be masculine now." If there is sets for both genders regardless of whether it looks masculine or feminine you will get more variety from that. Sure a big male Roegadyn will dress in a female looking outfit for memes but you're also getting male Hyurs, Elezens, Lalafells, Au Ras and Miqotes who would also equip it. Their female counterparts will equip it as well and thus you are getting more diversity with that set. And if there is a male looking set, many female characters will dress into that as well along with the male characters who either don't want to look like a meme or be feminine. I can only see more different customization outcomes from that than from sets strictly for males only or females only. I have seen many unconventional looking people in my server and duty finder. People dress the way they do because they enjoy it and it's a game. Not real life. In real combat you wouldn't see people dressing up in bikinis with a pighead wielding a glowy Axe fighting 10 feet tall dragons while flying on a giant dandelion. Square hasn't set out to make this game realistic. How marriage is handled in this game is so far away from Medieval conventions it is not even funny. Not to mention that we already got Star Wars and Halo looking people from the Garlean Empire and their superior technology/space ships. There's barely any armor in this game that would stop a bullet, let alone a gun blade. How we even manage to beat them every time is so unrealistically corny. This game is a Fantasy and not grounded in reality. So outfits shouldn't be genderlocked to try and force people to be "normal".

Best thing Square can do is make things ungenderlocked and tap into a new pool of people who would be willing to buy Mogstation items if they could even equip it.
There will always be male characters who will try to look feminine. Don't shun them away if you know you can make money off of them.

... What I want my character to wear is outside of the designers' tastes of what her gender should be wearing. There are things I want that are genderlocked and inaccessible.
This is similar to my problem. It does feel like the devs have a set idea of what is 'feminine' and if you don't like that style, then you are out of luck.
My personal gripe is that so much of the female gear is frilly and flounced, which looks really sweet on the smaller races but slightly ridiculous on a fem roe. We have a huge variety in body-shapes between the races and to my mind, that determines what looks good far more than gender. Gender-locking clothes and hairstyles leaves everyone short of options so I'd like to see far less of it.

That said, males characters need a lot more love. They have far fewer options when it comes to glamour than females.

They should just remove genderlocking. Let everyone wear whatever gear they want with whatever hairstyle they want. Let us be as feminine, as masculine, as androgynous or as ridiculous as we all would like to be no matter what gender our character is.

Maid outfit and wedding dress for males please, plus body hair sliders. As for the guy on about immersion I could have sworn within the story other players are hardly referenced in terms of story. So from an immersion standpoint you can ignore what others wear since we have very little impact on your own story.
