So for Red Mage is its damage ok in end game raids or does it get dropped straight after progression when everyone knows fights? I don't really know how the raid community is here since WoW was a bit different if you weren't planning to get world first no one really cares what you play.
Just as a heads-up, you won't be able to unlock Red Mage until you've reached level 50 in another class/job, like Monk. You'll also need to have purchased the Stormblood expansion if you haven't already. As for Monk, most jobs don't really feel fully fleshed out until you hit 50, and they tend to develop further from there. The positionals are tricky, but it can push out a lot of DPS, which is always nice. Since you need to level another job up to 50 anyways, I'd recommend sticking with Monk until you hit that point and see what you feel like then.

RDM has fine DPS damage as well, though not as high as some other jobs. Its raid utility is what its most appreciated for, but that includes farming after progression is complete. Any job in this game can clear any content as part of a group, and unless your static insists on sticking to the meta to the letter, you'll be able to main it just fine. Being good at your chosen job is more important.
