Think of it this way. You arent changing the hook on the line, youre changing how you hook the fish. Do you use a powerful tug or a precise one? The powerful one may yank the bait right out of the mouth of certain(smaller?) fish, the precise one may fail to hook certain(larger?) fish.

If it was just called "powerful/precision hook" that would make more sense, but "hookset" implies an item to me, not an action - it sounds like it's the type of hook that you are applying to your line. Which of course has to be done before you cast your line, not after the fish is on it!

In any case it's not well explained in the in-game help text. It says it negates inefficient hooking, but not how.

One of my friends in-game I met while going after Heliocorpion. We were both there before the window opened and wished each other good luck. He also admitted to having over 100 windows over the course of a year trying to get this fish. Every time he got him to bite, he has gotten away. Then here comes me. Level 50-something FSH with much lower stats. First window. First attempt. Got him. I immediately emoted /happy and wished I hadn't. Even though the other fisher congratulated me, I could sense his frustration.

I didn't just port away. I stood there cheering him on hoping he would finally get his elusive catch. Hope diminished as the window got smaller, and right before the last seconds began to tick away, he got the bite! And he once again got away. I felt so bad for him, and made me think (if even for a moment) that RNGesus is an actual entity than can totally have it in for you. Good or bad.

I know that's nonsense, but sometimes I just don't know.

Something I've noticed happen with odd frequency in big fishing is that I will get the big fish to bite at literally the last possible opportunity of that time/weather window, especially for the ones that never seem to bite at all. I'll be there for half an hour to an hour straight with no bite, then BAM, just as I am getting ready to pack the rod up, it bites, and I've got it when I thought all hope was lost. Like, it happens ALOT more than you would think. RNG is RNG and all that, but it's happened, and I have caught, way too many big fish at the last possible chance for that window often enough that I always stick around to and even past the last second, just in case. And it's paid off enough that I almost want to believe there is something to it, something built into the system that gives you that "last chance" bite at the very end.

Moral of the story: Don't give up early out of frustration or hopelessness. Wait to that last possible chance, cuz RNGesus loves teh dramatic apparently.

Haha, while venting on the forums, I missed a weather event...maybe two, can't see if it was cloudy before heatwave in South Shroud. SMH.

You can use this tool to see the next upcoming weather windows so you can plan ahead.

    Day 2

From bad to worse...well I’m no longer losing fish as they just wont bite. 3 runs, 6 hours and not a single bite. Trolle caught a minion, but was unable to advance her quest as well. Virtual fish that don’t bite...I feel like a fool, wasting time chasing fake fish that don’t bite. Oh and here, let me pay for this too.

You need to be patient. Sometimes it bites and sometimes it doesn't.

Yesterdays 11-hour fishing exposition really diminished fast. In the first few hours, I quickly caught the GT, and lost a strike during the 2 min interlude. The next weather event ≾90 mins. On my second attempt, I quickly caught GT again but this time Namitaro did not show up within the 2 min timer...so much for that buff. I found this odd. After this second attempt, I was able to luck into 3 more weather events over the next 6 hours...and not 1 bite. All the while I'm wondering "do I really need to catch GT again, do I need the buff to catch Namitaro, did I catch the GT quota, does GT move around the 3 tiered lake...etc. etc. etc. On my last attempt I even stripped my gathering from 1200 to 449 in hopes I might be receiving a penalty to keep being OP at bay, but after losing 50% of that event without a bite, I geared back up. In hindsight, getting your carbuncle in FFXI is a cake walk compared to this.
The early day ray of sunshine, (from semi figuring out the mechanics needed to succeed) quickly turned as dark as Namitaro's rancid soul.

Trollee McFisher SCORED! Nemitaro is in her bag now. All I caught was a glimpse when Trollee bagged the beast.
