Question about Miqo'te names (not conventions)

I tried searching for this but haven't had much luck: Several of the miqo'te subraces (if not all, I can't recall), use the clan name initial in front of their name. Y'Shtola is from the Jaguar clan so she has a Y' in front of her name, etc. But what I'm unclear about, is if I should call her Y'Shtola or Shtola if I knew her.
The game seems to go in both directions on this, and I wasn't sure if we knew if one was more formal than the other or not, or if there was some other reason why she is called both. And it isn't an isolated incident, as I believe F'Lhaminn is referred by both F'Lhaminn and Lhaminn.

    Thoughts?

Not adding the clan letter (i.e. Y'shtola vs. Shtola) is a sign of having a deep relationship with the Miqo'te in question.

Only Y'mhitra and Matoya refer to Y'shtola without her clan letter; both of them have very close relationships with her. I can't recall who referred to F'lhaminn without her clan letter, but if I were to wager a guess it would be Minfilia, to whom F'lhaminn was essentially a surrogate mother.

Wasn't it Thancred who refered to F'lhaminn as 'Lhammin'? The two were very close due to the events of 1.0's Ul'dah storyline so it makes sense he would (he refered to her even then as the "famed Songstress of Ul'dah" and "that flowers really do bloom in the desert" in reference to her, showing he really did feel strongly for her, although in his case it was probably just his flirting talking).

Also in Y'shtola's last scene in 2.55 (when she cast Flow), didn't she say "Farewell, Mhitra", showing cracks in her stoic facade that her sister is obviously close to her in her heart? (I'm too lazy to check my screenshots to verify this ).

    Pretty sure it was Niellefresne.

I've replayed this just last week and she does say "Forgive me, Mhitra", which I did not realise the first time since I did not know about Y'mhitra back then.

Excellent, this is just what I needed. I wondered if it might be something like that, but wanted to get the general consensus.

    Thank you all!

You could also look at how even though Lyse seems to know M'Naago fairly well it seems Lyse always seems to use the clan letter. It might also be a sign of respect?

I imagine it being like how Japanese use honorifics in casual vs formal situations, also along with the tie in with the personal connection with the person as well.

Lyse says "Naago", though. She mainly says "M'naago" when introducing her.

According to the Tales From The Storm, this is something Lyse decided to do on her own, and M'naago just let it be.

For the record, correct capitalisation of names is that the individual name is only capitalised when used without the tribe letter - eg. Y'shtola vs Shtola.

It fits with the pronounciation rule that the tribe-letter "flows into" the first syllable of the name - capitalising it would imply more of a stop or separation.

Yeah, just caught her calling her Naago and rushed over to this thread, got beaten to the punch. Comparing their relationship to the aforementioned relations of Y'shtola, and the fact that her close friends the other scions usually stick with the "Y", it's possible it's Lyse just being really friendly, like the anime characters that insist on referring to even just close acquaintances by their given name rather than family name, and probably got rebuffed by Y'shtola back before the game. I'd have to see her interact with other reasonably close Miqo'te to be sure, however.
