I think it's worth mentioning that while it isn't actually class-exclusive, the Fuma set from Labyrinth of the Ancients is clearly intended to be ninja gear, even though it can also be equipped by monks and (then-nonexistent) samurai.

From memory, their start-of-Heavensward Lv50 "rainbow" gear is actually unique and ninja-appropriate, while the other designs from that tier are shared either between classes and/or copied from earlier gearsets - the fending/maiming and aiming/casting/healing designs were from ARR endgame dungeons, and the striking set from the Arachne (and now Pagos) mage gear.

(The ninja gear was worn by the Doman ninjas during Heavensward MSQ, so possibly designed for them first and then used for player gear, but still not a shared design with any other equippable gear as far as I'm aware.)

thing is with fuma set that was a mnk unique gear on its release later changed to include nin in 2.4 when all previous mnk gear became mnk/nin gear. i'll have to double check rainbow set next time i log on still having 1 set unique still makes nin

I admit I was wrong. This thread was made in reaction to things I heard from people. Maybe it should just be deleted.

nothing wrong with asking for more unique gear we all want it, i like it for once that SE would do unique model for fending/maiming/striking/scouting/aiming/casting/healing for 1 set yes loads of work but be so much nicer to see once (that isn't AF gear) barring that alternate which set gets unique looking and work down a list etc so maybe 1 set per expansion could be unique for specific role.

Wait a minute. Why is Dragoon gear reskins of Tank gear and not the other way around? Why can't Tanks get gear that isn't a reskins of Dragoon gear? :/
Also, why do tanks have to share tank gear and why can't dragoons share dps gear?

Yeah it's weird that only melee DPS get their own sets Maming/Scouting/Striking. All ranged physical share a set (aiming), ranged magic share a set (casting), healers get healing and tanks get fending. Maybe to change up the aesthetic between similar styled jobs? It's kind of a bad strategy because then we can't get things like an evasion/parry tank, and all tanks will be high VIT/high HP/high DEF type jobs as opposed to other MMOs that have other kinds of tanks other than the armored wall type. Rune Fencer was an interesting kind of evasion/magic/parrying tank in FFXI, but I supposed FFXIV DRK is the spiritual successor of that.

well dragoon gear is intended to be proto-tank, as in halfplate/chain/scale armor as opposed to the heavy full plate of tank role, so fend and maim having similarities is kinda necessary, my one gripe is that weve never gotten anything else in the dps realm to stand beside drg, similar to how nothing else uses scout

it could be worse, at least dragoon looks badass whatever they are wearing.

I don't know what summoners gear looks like at high end, but at the end of HW (when I stopped playing last time) I looked like an 18th century school headmaster, and now that I've come back and started playing again: at one point when I was levelling to 70 I looked like a steampunk male stripper.
now at 70 in purely quested/dungeon drops, I look like a cross between Gandalf and Robin Hood. if Gandalf/Robin Hood was a cross dresser.

be thankful you get some badass looking armour, because it can always be worse.

It might have been added as monk gear first due to the release schedule, but it would have been at a point where they were fully aware they were releasing ninja soon and it would be used as gear for that class.

This does answer something else I'd been wondering about though - I'd noticed that the early Gear of Verbing sets had ninja grouped under Striking before splitting it off into Scouting. I'd assumed it must have been a change of plan by the devs, but that makes more sense if the gear existed before ninja class did and they were 'retrofitted' to include it rather than adding new separate Scouting gear to those pre-ninja gear tiers.

I assume it's because there are more types of melee DPS and they rely more on different stats? Ninja certainly needs a separate set because it runs off dexterity rather than strength, and also uses Aiming rather than Slaying accessories. And dragoon is built with more defence and (I assume) less skill speed, with the Maiming sets as the successor to the tank-and-dragoon midweight armours from ARR. Even when they're not exact copies of tanks, they're often more heavily armoured than the other DPS classes. Like the upcoming dungeon gear where (what I'm fairly sure is) the dragoon set has the coat from the melee sets combined with the metal gauntlets from the tank sets.

    That's what glamours are for!!!

And if you've been away for a while, you will have missed that they've added a new system for setting up glamour sets that can be applied to all your gear at once, as many times as you like, without spending prisms each time.

(Also, let me guess, you ended up with critical pieces of Shisui gear...?)

You're always going to end up looking pretty terrible if you just put on whatever pieces the game hands you as you go along.

All that said... the Lv70 Summoner job gear is weird.

    job gear is weird.
most assuredly they were working on ninja at the time of doing those gear sets, i kinda want se to put another job not necessarily a dps on both the maiming and scouting pieces to justify having that many different sets for 'melee'
