Will Cid and Nero ever return to main story quests?

Ever since the end of Heavensward it seems both Cid and Nero have remained exclusively in raid stories with little to no role in the main story.

I mean sure the argument is that they were searching for Omega during the events of Stormblood but it's weird to see that it seems like neither of them will play a part in the upcoming Garlean assault on Ala Mhigo and the Ghymlit Dark war in 4.5

Maybe things will change throughout 4.5 and in 5.0 but I legitimately miss Cid,Nero and the rest of the Ironworks crew

Maybe. Problem is that the writers are very careful to keep the MSQ completely self contained, and very little that happens outside of MSQ is ever even referenced, let alone important. Even the big important seeming sidequests Coil, CT, Triad, etc), while canon, don't really count as far as the MSQ is concerned.

The Coils being the exceptions....kinda,cuz if you did them prior to Alisaie's return in Heavensward both her and Alphinaud will reference their venture to the coils three times during the MSQs

It doesn't help that in Stormblood Zenos commented on Bahamut too with "I've expected nothing less from Bahamut's conquerer" which I dunno how he found out about that

What I wish is that they try to weave in both Cid and Nero bit by bit and only reference the omega raids if the player happened to finish them

I think they might be more likely to come back into MSQ during 5.0 - that is, the period from the start of the game to the end credits. (After which they're probably going to be occupied by the Lv80 raid quests?)

As much as they keep the different plotlines separate, there's also a degree of separation and assumed progress by each main game and post-game. The ARR Dragoon quests will have you meeting pre-Heavensward Estinien for the first time, even if you play them long after Heavensward. The Binding Coil happened in post-ARR whether you played it then or later, and Urianger is present and involved even if he should be elsewhere according to the current MSQ. (The game additionally handles this by having, essentially, post-ARR Urianger present at the Waking Sands for as long as he needs to be accessible for quests. Otherwise he will be absent when the plot calls for it.)

If Cid and Nero reappear during 5.0, they will most likely have a small amount of varying dialogue depending on whether you cleared Omega or not, but then will get on with whatever the plot needs them to do.

Having just replayed Heavensward recently, Cid is quite involved in the MSQ there, regardless of his part in the Crystal Tower quests.

I believe this line is intended to be read as he expected nothing less from Omega, the one who caught & contained Bahamut. He says that line while in Doma right before rushing back to Gyr Abania yeah? I always assumed that was when the XIIth found Shinryu in his pokeball.

I would not be surprised, if we get closer to Garlemald somehow, to get more info around Cid (and why not Nero) in 5.0. No that I particularly like these characters, but it would make sense. Especially because Cid played a strong role in ARR and HW.

MSQ is self contained, but it could get a bit deeper if it would assume you did those side quests, because it's fairly detremental for both; we defeated Omega, most certainly saving the world on a greater scale than liberating Doma and/or Ala Mhigo. Yet we'll get next to no credit for that in MSQ. I don't think it keeps the immersion by trying to maintain some coherence.

Or MSQ characters just ignore your side quests exploits by designso they can see you as a delivery girl/boy and not the one that defeated Bahamut/Alexander/Omega/the Warring Triad/the Fours Lords

I always forget that tidbit about Omega being the one that caught Bahamut,though I always assumed that line referred to the Warrior of Light since it was said not too far after Naadam and the failed assassination attempt with Yugiri

But yeah most likely it's as you said that he probably caught news of the XIIth legion finding Shinryu which would have him rush immediately to Ala Mhigo

I actually missed that since I did the Crystal Tower alliance raids after I finished the Omega raids.....yyyyeah I'm a bit backward cuz I was too dumb to notice the NPC that looks exactly like Nero in Mor Dhona all this time xD

They might though both would be risking their freedoms if they did set foot in Gralemald. I want to say Varis when you first meet him post Bismark says something about Bahamut as well. You also get a Crystal Tower flashback from Cid if you completed it before getting to that point in the Omega storyline. HW has a lot of mentions as during it you can get coil from the twins and if my Varis line counts there too, Azure dragoon, defeating of Nale and Gaius if your legacy otherwise just Gaius. Then the Crystal Tower mention soon after Nero just waltzes into that meeting. I do wonder what their next bromance banter will be about.

I have a feeling they will have their parts to play in the MSQ again in due time. Besides, the reemergence of a certain thought-to-be-dead prominent Garlean, who happens to have ties to both Nero and Cid, could lead into some interesting potential for future interactions.
