There's something about ESO, that I just don't like. It never hooks me. I play it on and off when new expansions and stuff comes, but it's just to do the story. I always say this time I will play more, but I never do. I just do the story and get off, because I like Elder Scrolls. Yeah, you pretty much have to sub, since crafting is such a big part of that game. It's not worth it not to.

I think Stormblood is the point where older / hardcore players began to see the limits of the current overall system (patch cycle, gearing, tomestones, content). I guess for someone that joined during Stormblood there's plenty to do still. For the others, each patch would give some content for a few weeks (and I remember how 4.3 what pretty much wrapped up in less than a week, and HoH was such a disappointment), then it's back for waiting next patch.
It's difficult for Squeenix to change I guess, because beyond this discontent it's still a safe pattern where people keep their subs active -which is all that matters, technically. I belive thoughg it's time for the game to get some fresh air (like Blue Mage seems to be, but we're not there yet).

Generally speaking, I'd prefer if we had content that travels through expansions, for instance instead of Heaven on High and its most than likely counterpart in 5.35, what if we upgraded PotD with each level cap? What if Eureka didn't lock relic weapon but would offer shiney glamour and its own system (logos mostly), and would be updated on that basis through the expansions.?

My idea / desire is to avoid spending dev resources in re-creating a content that people would label as "reskin of X so I won't do it", give minimal updates to what currently exists, and each expansion could bring something really original (like for 5.0 I'm kinda hyped for Ishgard related announcements).

TESO or Eve online would like to have a word with you.
IDK about Eve, but I've played TESO for a few years before starting this game and it's a treadmill as well, just a different kind. Yes, you don't have any actual gear progression but this is simulated every few patch cycles by completely popular gears/skills in the name of "balance". Don't be fooled by that, this is meant to force players to regear every few patches, the same we have here.
All MMORPGs are big hamster-wheels at their core.

I have played other games. I played Guild Wars for several years off and on. NWO. NWN. SWtOR. AION. I played World of Warcraft for way more than that, and a couple of the things that really attract me to FFXIV beyond the obvious is player appreciation, reasonable pricing and what seems to be an expeditious rate of incoming content.

I am looking forward to years of satisfying game play from FFXIV and wish for the IP to endure.

I ve been having the same gear on my characters for years now on TESO and don't feel the least compelled to play, only playing when new content is released to actually do the content, just like how I'd play any non mmo. And this is fine.

The only treadmill is during holiday events for cosmetics or if you re alcast and want to min/max a character for reasons I cannot even fathom due to how useless it is in TESO.

They do this so the content last. If they removed this then people (possible ones like you) would clear and max out all the content in 2-4 weeks leaving 1-2 months with nothing to do. Those people would then complain about the lack of content.

The issue is thats already kind of a problem with this game. Outside of Savage and Eureka for those few who actually have pushed onto the end of each relic step most of the “new” content is finished off in a week or two with no real incentive to keep getting a higher iLvl because you know that by the time the new patch is out catch-up is fairly easy. Stormblood in particular has been pretty bad with the thinning of content to the point where the glaring flaws of this game are becoming more pronounced and no amount of gating will ever resolve the issues.

The Reward Structure is total garbage as the ratio between the grind and reward is always out of wack to the point that the only good option is Savage, a good example would be Eureka with outdated Gear with a monstrous grind. On top of that you have the iLvl issue that Yoshida refuses to even attempt at tackling because adding a +1 is easier than trying to make armor stat diversity that actually affects your rotations or the like. At this point rewards and gear most players are trained to do Extreme while its relevant, do your MSQ and basic NM raid and unsub till the next patch comes around because most of your grind will be made obsolete and that you’ll be stuck doing the same monotonous task thanks to the thinning of content and while montonous grinding isn’t odd in MMOs the issue here is with the Relic now being exclusively tied to Eureka we have lost most reasons to do old content furthering killing their shelf lives.

I've played a couple of mmos where an expansion changed things about the game in such a way that it sapped my enjoyment right out of it. It's not that I don't want FFXIV to be shaken up a bit; I'm afraid of it.

I don't adapt well to change. Consistency is my middle name. I am in strong favor of additions. If they were to add beastmaster as another gathering class with its own mechanics: Awesome! If they were to add it that changed gathering as we know it: Not so awesome.

The only changes I am really in favor for are those that improve QoL. I see no reason to rock the boat to a formula that is currently working, but also want SE to continue to try and add content outside the norm that players enjoy. I know they are total hit or miss, and they seem to be about due for a hit. Fingers crossed.

Its good. ESO for me the story is just lacking, I guess in a way FFXIV spoiled me when it comes to good MMO storylines.

Stormblood was a step back for me compared to HW and that may be due to DRK balance and other things including the dull storyline up until 4.4.

I think Shadowbringers will bring alot of new things to FFXIV which will reignite many old timers love for the game.
