What is the trust system?
Trusts are NPC companions that will help players with (apparently only) low level content. The only confirmed NPCs that can be used as Trusts when they get introduced are the core group of Scions, like Thancred and Y'shtola, though I'm fairly sure the devs said they'd add more characters later.

The Trust system is not meant to fully replace Player parties for the group contents but more to help players progress in the Storyline and help them level up their Jobs if they don't want to wait for long queues or just want to solo leveling.
You're most likely still expect to party with players for standard group contents and trials.
It certainly will be a prayer answered for most players during 5.0 release because of the expect long queue time for players who play DPS Jobs for progress in the Main Scenario storyline.
Not to mention if we are only getting Tank and Healer Job in 5.0, those who are backtracking to level up the new Tank and/or Healer Job will find the early days of 5.0 to be very lacking in DPS players for their queues for leveling up contents.

It's a system first added into FFXI a couple of years ago designed to allow players to solo through hard party content without a party. The core of it is you collect copies of story npcs who you can summon and fill up spots in a party, and will automatically attack the enemy when you do, and effectively function as other party members. FFXI's version had npcs each with a dedicated role (some were healers, some were tanks, some DPS, and some didn't attack but were pure support only) that was set and couldn't be changed, although they did have their own unique skills and attacks that were often more powerful than what the player had access to. It was pretty much the best change to happen to FFXI, and the announcement that it's coming to FFXIV too is exciting, if a little unexpected.
I'd still prefer my old FFXIV 1.0 Path Companion to return though, but now I think that ship has sailed sadly...![]()
