As to the topic at hand, my wife chose it the end.

ffxiv is the most beautiful game, every land has it's own unique feel, the weather is very neat. Very beautiful game. To many gates, and there are to many overly complicated aspects. Overall it is fun.

Deal breaker is I don't like the feel of "date" graphics I can't stand it. It's a killer, I don't think there is a more beautiful game then FFXIV.

Question do you think they will have a VR version of the game, I would love to see it while using the oculus, that would be awesome, not first person though.

Oh and one more thing.. is it just me or are FFXIV players a bit more mature. I feel that GW2, SWTOR, even LOTOR. I feel like this community is more willing to help less L33T people here. I think the 10$ a month sub keeps out the riff raff. Huge bonus!

Gameplay, Story, and the fact that it was a ff game. Many people tend to stick with a title if the past titles were good.

You should NEVER need a 338 page document to be able to understand crafting! PERIOD!!!!! So I would disagree with you, FFXIV does not have the best crafting.
Hmm, interesting looking guide. But the fact that I'm a maxed-out omicrafter who has never seen it before sort of disproves your assertion that you "need" to read it to understand crafting. I learned to craft the same way I learned to play PLD or SCH- by doing. Whenever I hit a snag I would refer to google or one of the established FF14 resource websites (same as for any other job in the game) but I never had to sit down and read a monster like that from end to end, lol.

I personally love the crafting and gathering in FF14 more than any other MMO I've played (which is more than I can be bothered to name right now) but I get the whole "different strokes for different folks" thing. The "best" of anything will always be subjective. Can we at least agree that FF14 has the most in-depth and fleshed-out crafting and gathering system available?

Hat's off to you sir, there are just to many skill's. I tried to look for an easier guide but they all eventual lead to this one if you want to get a full explanation to everything there is to it. I like an MMO to have a "mindless" option. That is usually gathering, but in FFXIV it gets more complicated at 60. I use up all my brain power at work and sometimes I just want to mindlessly do something. That use to be gathering.

I guess I can agree with you. I feel that the people who think this game is overly complicated are just not playing the game and moved on to other games.. "You'll get no sympathy here Eric." lol And what we have left with here on the forums and in game are people who like this type of gaming that's why they stick around.

My wife LOVES the crafting in this game she's on her way to 70 all, all of her jobs are in the 55-56 range. I'm glad she does so I don't have to.

    1) Evolving playable character. I tend to enjoy games where the character can gain better equipment or change appearances in game.

    2) Being rewarded for investing time or resources or skill instead of being rewarded randomly. I don't do gambling.

You really don't have to read a 338 page document to craft. Think of it more like a long journey, where you gradually work your way to becoming an artisan, constantly learning and improving your technique. For those of us who love crafting, the depth and complexity adds to the experience and satisfaction when you reach the top. For those who don't like that depth, you can power to lv70 with leve's and namazu quests, slap on a basic lv70 white hq set and make the bulk majority of items and furniture in the game with basic craft knowledge.

There's something for everyone. It's accessible to those who just want to make basic items, but has depth for those who want to master it. A mistake a lot of players make is being casual crafters, yet wanting access to the absolute endgame crafted items. It just shouldn't work that way, similar to how Normal raiders shouldn't be able to easily clear Ultimate.

That's also another "deal maker" for me in that FF hasn't caved in yet on making absolutely everything simple and effort free, like WoW has. I hate games that treat you like you aren't intelligent enough to handle complexity and try to spoonfeed and hand everything in the game to you. FF is far from perfect on that, but they hold strong on certain gameplay elements, unlike WoW which has thrown it aside completely.

What hooks me on this game are the visuals. Spell effects, boss abilities and transitions, and just the epic way the visuals bring the game to life. That and the crafting system.
