    I think for the me the biggest thing is the whole gaming industry slowly failing and new games coming out not really being worth their price. For the fraction of the cost a new game that'd probably last for a few days or a few weeks, I get a full month of something to do.
    And because part of the game is sitting around waiting for dungeon/raid/whatever queues, I can do other things while waiting on those.

    While that might work with other MMOs as well, FF14 specifically is probably because I like the FF series and is one of the better MMOs out there.

    Also, catgirls.

    Crafting and gathering by far is the best of any MMO I've played although they've started to water down the endgame a little to make it more accessible which is a shame. Hoping for good things with Shadowbringers.

    That and WoW has plummeted in quality. As much as I might grumble about Eureka and the ever expanding cash shop, BFA was a terrible expansion. I have fun when I play FF14.

    Two major dealbreakers for me

    Not being able to jump. I seriously won't play a game if I can't jump. I hated FFXIV 1.0
    Not being able to hide your helmet. I quit Destiny specifically for this reason.

    ----------

    Deal makers--Global chat. I love a big social circle for grinding and killing time. I unlocked Mentor status specifically to get back into Novice Network after my newbie status wore off.

    Deal makers--Duties, duty roulettes. Group content. I've quit MMOs that didn't have duties.

    ------------

    Strong perk--teleports.

    • One character that can swap to any job, making ALTs completely optional;
    • Leveling up is not a main focus and does not need to take months to hit maximum level cap;
    • Gear progression does not take long compared to some games' months, or even, year, long progression (this is especially refreshing as an adult with responsibilities and a 60 hour work week);
    • Gear progression is reset with every new expansion or raid tier release (again, goes great if you have adult responsibilities that massively constrict your time)
    • Content is created with the idea of needing only 8 people at most; compared to the last MMO I played, where a guild of 30+ were required for some fights;
    • "Crafted" gear is a step below raid gear; compared to another MMO I played before FFXIV that required you to get a fragment from this boss, another from another, a few dozen rare drops from common enemies to make raid-tier like gear, but required a certain proficiency in a select crafting profession;
    • The story and importance placed on lore;
    • Absolutely the music;
    • Cash shop is vanity, level boost and story skip with no impact on the game.

    So I play several MMOs....WoW, SWTOR, FFXIV, ESO, used to play TERA, have dabbled in Neverwinter, LOTRO, and others.

    Big things I like in MMOs that make them extra great:
    - Not having to change characters to do different things (so far FFXIV is the only one to really do this, although ESO kinda tries a bit)
    - Having some sort of progression across characters for alts (ESO and SWTOR do this well, WoW does a tad bit since 8.1)
    - Ease of leveling characters (FFXIV does this great on preferred worlds, WoW used to be great at this but went downhill, SWTOR does this well)
    - Story, story, story (FFXIV wins here, followed closely by ESO then SWTOR)

    Things that aren't 'dealmakers' but I like:
    - Community housing (it's a lot cooler to have my house everybody can see next to my neighbors than everybody have the same instance and have to access separately)
    - Customization (WoW is king here, followed by ESO. FFXIV and SWTOR do decent)
    - Crafting systems (FFXIV is king here, followed by ESO. SWTOR and WoW suck at this.)
    - Battle companions (SWTOR wins here, followed by FFXIV.)

    Okay, I too have played many MMO's:
    UO - LOTOR - GW2 - SWTOR - ESO not a big fan, I do like that there is no subscription. I will say that I didn't play it enough to give it a decent shot? Shouldn't a game pull you in from the begging?

    I agree with most of what you have to say but the two issues listed above!

    SWTOR - The individual Story lines for each individual class is the best I've ever seen. The Imperil Agent story line is epic! There are 8 classes and each class has its very own very unique individual story line. I also like that each of my 8 charters have voices and options to respond. It’s very emissive, you really get sucked into the story. Also holding a lightsaber is pretty cool, and using the force.To me that is what made that game special, the individual stories, every MMO quests are practically the same, go talk to this guy go kill/gather this or that. Because the 8 classes individual story lines were SO unique it made replayability so much better. I felt like it was a whole new game each time I play thought because each individual class story was so unique and well done.

    The worst part about SWTOR is that it looked dated on release, it’s if they used a late 90’s gaming engine. Such a shame, if SWTOR looked as good as FFXIV? Who knows.

    For FFXIV I don't feel connected to the story line at all, even if you click as fast as you can they just talk to dam much. You have this "Hero of Light" that just *nods* in epic scenes, it just kill's it for me. Going from SWTOR to this is…., at least give me a White bubble with what my champion would say.. There's TO much lore I don't even know why I'm in stormblood, and honestly, I don't care.

    If you want easy crafting and gathering go to SWTOR they have dozens of companions and you can send each one of them out on missions to do the gathering for you and they do the crafting for you.

    GW2 it's just $$ get money unlock recip and build, grind grind grind $$$, $$$, $$$ real or in-game currency. *shrugs*

    But if you think FFXIV crafting is "good" then you my friend are twisted and love torture! I agree that crafting should be more difficult then gathering or several aspects of an MMO or it wouldn't be worth it.. but this my friend is nuts.. it's just not ok!

    You should NEVER need a 338 page document to be able to understand crafting! PERIOD!!!!! So I would disagree with you, FFXIV does not have the best crafting.

    Oh and one more thing.. is it just me or are FFXIV players a bit more mature. I feel that GW2, SWTOR, even LOTOR. I feel like this community is more willing to help less L33T people here. I think the 10$ a month sub keeps out the riff raff. Huge bonus!

    Hmm, interesting looking guide. But the fact that I'm a maxed-out omicrafter who has never seen it before sort of disproves your assertion that you "need" to read it to understand crafting. I learned to craft the same way I learned to play PLD or SCH- by doing. Whenever I hit a snag I would refer to google or one of the established FF14 resource websites (same as for any other job in the game) but I never had to sit down and read a monster like that from end to end, lol.

    I personally love the crafting and gathering in FF14 more than any other MMO I've played (which is more than I can be bothered to name right now) but I get the whole "different strokes for different folks" thing. The "best" of anything will always be subjective. Can we at least agree that FF14 has the most in-depth and fleshed-out crafting and gathering system available?

    Hat's off to you sir, there are just to many skill's. I tried to look for an easier guide but they all eventual lead to this one if you want to get a full explanation to everything there is to it. I like an MMO to have a "mindless" option. That is usually gathering, but in FFXIV it gets more complicated at 60. I use up all my brain power at work and sometimes I just want to mindlessly do something. That use to be gathering.

    I guess I can agree with you. I feel that the people who think this game is overly complicated are just not playing the game and moved on to other games.. "You'll get no sympathy here Eric." lol And what we have left with here on the forums and in game are people who like this type of gaming that's why they stick around.

    My wife LOVES the crafting in this game she's on her way to 70 all, all of her jobs are in the 55-56 range. I'm glad she does so I don't have to.
