So ARR was not the game moved to some type of version of the Luminous engine?Their code for FF14 is notoriously difficult to work with. You also have to understand that the Black Desert Engine was made specifically to handle intense graphics and many characters on screen at once. Crystal Tools however, the engine FFXIV is using, from what I can gather took a more Jack of All Trades route in terms of what it's processing power could be focused upon. Also the latter was specifically designed with the 360, PS3, PC, and the Wii - a.k.a. last generation consoles that are quickly approaching two generations past at the rate things are going. They'd have to do a lot to make the game look close to BDO's levels with the limitations that Crystal Tools places upon them, especially since from what I can gather it doesn't have the ability to be updated to an insane degree like the near three decade spanning Gamebryo. It's not like they can just throw their hands up and go 'HEY LET'S SWITCH TO LUMINOUS STUDIO (FFXV's engine)' and then everything will be right as rain either.

No, the upgraded engine ARR uses is something of a Frankenstein. It's referred to in interviews as a 'sibling' to Luminous, but it isn't the actual engine by any means.

And yet has nothing to do with Crystal Tools - the engine that 1.0 used (and FFXIII and it's ilk as well). A number of character and gear models and designs that originated in 1.0 have been reused, but they are rendered in the new engine, not 1.0. The lack of fancy bells and whistles such as better environmental animations is a design choice made to allow the game to be run on more modest computers rather than making the game exclusive to only those with $5000+ high end gaming rigs (a fault that 1.0 was derided for, only making the game playable on for-the-time high-end PCs).No, the upgraded engine ARR uses is something of a Frankenstein. The whole 'system limitations' meme is getting tired, as it doesn't really take into account all the pros and cons for 'improvements' to the graphics.

They could easily implement interactive foliage in the game, and make it an optional setting, ran client side. It has nothing to do with server limitations, because such interaction is calcutated by the client.
It is also not very demanding, many games have it and it doesn't impact performances much. Even Wow has an implementation of it.
The same debate can be had with AA and textures quality.
At this point, the only reason we don't have this expected settings in a AAA game is the lack of will to do so from the Dev team.

Ok...
I'm entering a chaotic state of confusion..
One side says it's not possible due to the server or engine
Another says it's completely possible

To be more precise, servers don't handle the graphics part of the game. This is why you can use reshade or edit in game textures directly on your computer.
Putting those improvements directly in the game is totally doable, and make them optional so it doesn't hut people with lower end computers.
It all comes down to the dev team in the end, whether or not they want to improve the graphics of their product so it looks more like a AAA MMO.

And why is it not being done?
