Unless it can be melded, nothing they make will ever compete with 2x melded crafted gear. Why? Because the game is balanced around a single materia in crafted gear. However unique gear can give unique bonuses you can't get through materia. Stats that don't have materia associated with them or can't be put on that particular piece.
I'm hoping for a few things from the new armour.
Firstly that it isn't too easy to obtain.
Secondly that it has stats that can't be replicated by melded gear so that it's a real alternative to it in at least some situations. Something along the lines of adding refresh for mages, haste for melee or some bonus to a skill or action.
Thirdly that it's scaleable so that it can be upgraded in some way when the level cap eventually increases.
Let's be fair... it didn't take weeks to get your AF in FFXI, and I doubt it will in this game either.
I would love some good challenges in this game, but I'm not sure I'm really confident in SE making challenging quests for this game yet. Bosses they seem to be doing a decent job of, though, but this game is constantly shifting and it's very hard for them to balance for... I assume they rather make things easier initially rather than potentially impossible. Ifrit for example has shifted with the updates after his release, and 1.21 I think will see a large increase in overall difficulty to fights since casting while moving is being stripped. No more kite-healing or kite-raising or... any of that.
Why should I have to guess about ANYTHING regarding 1.21? This information should be FACT by now.
My guess is that 1.21 will come sometime in the future!
