    Visual Artifacts & DirectX Crash

    Hi, this issue does not pertain to me but rather someone I am helping in order to resolve their issue.

    Computer Specs:
    • OS - Windows 10 Home
    • RAM - 16GB DDR4 2400MHz
    • CPU - Intel i7-8700
    • GPU - GeForce RTX 2070

    The game has been running absolutely fine for the past week, and only in the past 2 days has an issue begun occurring. At first, it was intermittent CTDs every 2 or 3 hours, citing a DirectX error with an error code of '11000002'. The issue has gradually increased to occurring every 1 or 2 minutes with the same error code, preceded by strange visual artifacts such as flashing red/blue circles, black squares flashing (usually around foliage), the screen itself dimming to black for just a frame or so, and others. Typically within 30 seconds of this happening, the game will either freeze and halt the entire system, or crash immediately with the same '11000002' error. Other errors such as '1000000d' have also occurred.

    Things we have tried:
    1. Running ffxivboot, ffxivlauncher, ffxiv, and ffxiv_dx11 in Windows 7/Windows 8 compatibility mode and administrator mode, and all combinations thereof.
    2. Underclocking the GPU from anywhere between 20 and 300 MHz.
    3. Increasing the power limit for the GPU to 118%.
    4. Running in DirectX 9 mode.
    5. Reinstalling FFXIV.
    6. Resetting the operating system.
    7. Deleting config info for FFXIV.
    8. Updating nVidia drivers.
    9. Deleting nVidia drivers using DDU and reinstalling them.
    10. Completing all Windows updates (and reverting them).
    11. Updating the BIOS and all other drivers.
    12. Making a firewall and Windows Defender exception for FFXIV.
    13. Reinstalling dependencies.
    14. Performing a clean boot and attempting without any of the 'fixes' active.
    15. Running at bare minimum graphics settings, 1920x1080p (as opposed to 1440p), 60hz (as opposed to 144hz).
    16. Limiting framerate ingame to 1/1 refresh rate, 1/2 refresh rate.
    17. Limiting framerate via nVidia Control Panel to Adaptive and Adaptive (Half).

    There is very little I can think of trying at this point, but the mere fact that the game *was* working beforehand is enough to make me think it can be fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I would double check to make sure everything is staying cool while the computer is on and/or in-game.
    Check for unrestricted airflow on all of the fans and coolers, especially the ones on the video card.
    Clean/blow out any dust build up or dust bunnies.
    If the computer has a non-mesh-type inclosed case/tower, try running it with the side covers removed and see if the issue persists.

    Also, check the disk health of your D drive.
    CrystalDiskInfo is a great freeware program to perform that check.

    Thank you for the suggestions. The PC is very new and as such doesn't have much dust at all inside - the case is mesh on all sides except for the bottom, with a case fan, 3 fans on the GPU, a fan of the PSU, and a CPU cooler. Temperatures don't exceed 60 degrees when the issues occur, and after prolonged gameplay (when it was working) it would hover around 80 degrees at the very most.

    I will check the health of D drive but as it's also been in use for only a week I doubt it will have deteriorated much. Thanks again.

    "strange visual artifacts" are often an indication that there is a problem with the memory on the graphics board. Sometimes it is a software problem when the memory is not managed properly, sometimes a hardware failure. I had some visual artifacts a while back, the ground would disappear or get all checker board before the system would crash. Changed graphics card and all is fine now.
    Do you have another graphics card you can try?

    This is a big possibility as well. There are no graphics cards on hand to test, though funnily enough every other game works perfectly fine on this card - even games that also use DirectX 11, all with no graphical glitches or funny business. Would be unfortunate if this card was broken though. As an update, nVidia drivers were reverted from 417.22 to 416.94 and this showed a marginal improvement (longer to crash, though artifacts like squares and flashing still happened).

    One more thought. Have you tried a lower frame rate?
    Not sure why but I had to drop my frame rate to 30. 60 has worked great all year - but recently "something happened". I started getting some glitchy graphics and all the fans in the PC sounded like they were on full. Normally the system is quiet. (and is again at 30 fps).
    Hope to get a new graphics card for christmas. My current one is fairly old - radeon 7600.

    Good afternoon Onz and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

    I'll have to agree with some of the comments already stated. Heavy artifact and graphical glitches like you've described are usually attributed to either driver corruption or errors within the hardware itself. If you have already tried a clean reinstall of the drivers (on top of everything else you listed), it does point to the hardware being the issue. Graphics cards and drivers will interact with game engines differently, so it is possible that you can have an issue with this game, but not others. I hesitate to consider the hardware "faulty" but it could have some issues with playing the game. If you do get the chance to swap out graphics cards, even if only to test it, I'd recommend trying that.

    We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!

    In contrast to my last post, I am now very sure that it is the card. Today, other games are now crashing and the display itself has bluescreen'd frequently with severe discolouration of the second monitor. We are going to RMA the card and try a different one once we can get our hands on it.

    I'm not sure what made the card go from perfectly running for about a week to suddenly near-on bricking itself, but at least I have some closure. Will update once another card has been used.

    Hi Onz, I'm having the same problem with my RTX2070, with the difference of intermittent white flashing polka dots and occasional artifacts. My DirectX 11 won't crash very frequently, but it has no rhyme or reason that I can find. It happens both on idle screens and during boss fights. My card still seamlessly plays things with far more intensive graphics than FFXIV, so I'm curious to see if your friend has resolved their issue.

    same errors started 2 days ago, but no graphical issues, just direct x crash with 11 or frozen image eith 9. Got windows 7 and a geforce titan. Also opened a post of my own... would be SO weird to have all these broken videocards..
