So, we beat the Garleans, huh?

    That's it? We win?

All they are is a roadblock doomed to be flattened?

I was hoping thoughout SB for something that suggested that they would fight back, but doesn't this just make the war already won for us? Their government is a front for ascians, their people Allagan copycats, they haven't even looked at the burn, which had all sorts of life on it.

I dunno, I'm not very enthused. I feel like I just want to spoil myself by reading the ending and them deciding if the book is worth reading. either way it feels like the agency of the Garleans, right down to their politics is now lost and they are now in full on trash mob mode, something without anything left but to be conquered and beaten into submission.

But the aggrivating part is getting news of the victory beforehand, now I just want to skip to the ending.

I disagree. 4.4 showed the current emperor frustrated, like a caged beast. Their agency is not completely lost, they haven't fully submitted.
There are Garleans that want peace, and to be rid of the Ascians, just as much as the WoL and the Scions do. I see us working together eventually.

Yea I thought their Empire was this big baddy but it was the Ascians all along and Garleans are only the victims of circumstance.

When you enjoy your superiority, willingly oppress people, commit genocidal acts, and force conditions that amount to war crimes, you lose the right to claim being a victim even if circumstance placed you in the aggressor's side.

Heh... Exactly. Why else would Hien be ok with letting someone who owned the brothel a certain character was forced to work, in go free.

It is a recurring thing in Final Fantasy for the intriguing political villain to be shunted to the sidelines for some magical jerk from nowhere that has little if any relation to the preceding plot.

What we saw in the trailer is that a "simple" victory over the Garleans won't work and just leads to the destruction of the world from an overflow of Light. The expansion will not be about us going to war and beating the Garleans and that's that, but us knowing that won't work and finding a much more creative, much more surprising, and much more involved way of defeating Garlemald and the Ascians without causing the Flood of Light. The trailer doesn't spoil us, it assures us that FFXIV is not, in fact, going down a cliched path of hero-beats-evil-empire-the-end storytelling this time and to buckle up.

I believe Shadowbringers will finally answer a question that I've had ever since I heard Nero talk about it.

What will the world do without its champion? The "Warrior of Light" is gone.
