Error 17 keeps happening despite reset

OK I keep crashing despite having played all day. The typical error 17 message does appear each time. I have already done a complete re-install after wiping everything. This is like the third time actually that I have had to do a reset like this. Can anyone help out here?

Sorry I don't have a screenshot of the error, but it says "An unexpected error has occured. (17) or something very similar. It doesnt happen every time, but usually happens when trying to teleport to another zone during the loading screen.

And now I cant get the launcher to finish updating the patch files so I can even try to log in again. It starts normally, then I get an error and the launcher logs me out.

The error you are describing (Error 17) occurs when Direct X crashes. The " Unable to update update patch files" error is a connection problem. How long have these problems been going? Also what have you done to try and resolve them?

the error 17 problem has been going on for a couple of weeks. I have done a complete re-install three times including local files, updated my video drivers, and tried turning off directx 11. The connection issue just started today however.

For the Direct X crash, please try the following:

-Try switching to DirectX 9 by selecting the ‘Config’ button on the launcher
-Perform a clean boot by opening the task manager and select the 'Start up' Tab. Disable everything


For the connection issue, try the following:

- The game will use the Internet Explorer web browser to connect to the internet. Open Internet Explorer, then open the "Tools" setting, go to "Internet Options" and adjust the following settings:
- Under the "General" tab, please delete ALL browser history.
- Under the "Security" tab, please move the slider to the lowest possible settings or no higher than "Medium"
- Under the "Privacy" tab, click “Advanced” and select ‘Accept’ under both First Party and Third Party Cookies.
- Under the "Advanced" tab, please make sure that "Allow software to run or install even if signature is invalid" is CHECKED.
- Make sure that all SSL and TLS (EXCEPT SSL 3.0) are CHECKED. [SSL 3.0 should be UNCHECKED]
- Hit "Apply" to save the settings, and then "OK, to close the Internet Options menu.
- Right-Click on the FFXIV launcher icon and select "Properties"
- Go to the "Compatibility" tab, and change the compatibility mode to "Windows 7"
- Hit "Apply", then "OK" to save the changes.
- Please RESTART your PC now. Once your PC has been restarted, Right-Click the FFXIV launcher icon once more and select "Run as Administrator"

-Make sure your fire wall or antivirus program is not interfering with the game

So I have made those changes. It is still starting the update, the after a bit just drops off and logs me out with the same error as I listed above. I have reset my modem/router, ran a speed test to make sure my connect is good, and spoke with my ISP to make sure things were ok on their end. Still no luck on anything.

You mentioned you did a speed test. What do you mean by that and also, what did you discuss with your ISP?
I would also like to suggest the following:

- Check to see if the following port ranges are opened on your router. You can contact your ISP and request they open them for you:

-Change the DNS to 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1.

I ran an internet speed test. ookla.com I think? the connection issue should be ok now, I got in and played long enough to run once instance of POTD, and crashed with the error 17 message again. I had changed the DirectX setting to run on 9, plus I ran the updater/fixer from Microsoft. So now I have no clue what the crash is about. Seems to happen when zoning in or out of somewhere.
