More important than jobs, the interface, or version 2.0...

Four points, complaints about which keep bubbling up at a faster and faster rate in these forums, and which could very well cause FFXIV's scant population to almost completely dry up, even before the arrival of version 2.0. Four points that could also cause the eagerly anticipated new population, expected to come with said version 2.0, never to materialize at the expected levels, if word gets out:

    1) Perfunctory feel of combat / Pervasive weakness of foes / Quick-to-die enemies that don't allow classes to feel useful, let alone shine / Skills made uninteresting and unimportant by pace of fight / Action-spamming fights / Solo-style fighting, even in party... no sense of a team.

    2) Overall lack of challenge / Easy world, easy quests, easy everything / Common drops that everybody ends up owning soon / Shallowness of Materia creation and melding.

    3) Speed of leveling / Cap-heavy game / Shallow content and irrelevancy of goals for low and mid level.

    4) Carelessly built chain of supply-and-demand that leads to a broken enconomy.

These are fundamentals that the game should be built on. Please give us a sign that you are aware of these issues, and that you intend to fix them; or at least, let us know otherwise, so that we don't waste our time pining for changes that shall never come.

The overall feeling in Eorzea these days (and this in Selbina, arguably the most populous server of them all) is one of inertia. Very little happens. Most players, are capped in multiple classes and seem to have had enough of the dungeons, the primals, the strongholds, the NMs... Veteran players are out "until the patch" with no promising objectives left to entice them into fight. People are either beta-testing Tera, or taking a break to try out The Old Republic, or perhaps finishing Skyrim. Anything but playing FFXIV. Some nights in the past two weeks it has felt like the world has ground to a halt. Please say something... More importantly, do something. Perhaps (since you don't seem to know it) start by asking someone to tell you how classic FFXI worked and understand where we are coming from.

    1. Jobs, New BR system.
    2. 2.0, Jobs
    3. 2.0
    4. 2.0

All of this stuff is what everyone expects from 2.0. We shouldn't have to get them to acknowledge it, it is assumed that this should be in an MMO. When Yoshida says "FFXIV 2.0 has to be perfect" obviously these things need to be resolved in it, without asking.

Also Selbina is far from dead right now. Outside of my LS I have been in 4 PUG Moogle groups, had several offers for Ifrit, and a few spiritbond parties. There are always shouts in Ul'dah for something.

That said I can't wait for 1.21, and dread 1.22-1.23 which sound like the worst drought of endgame content while we wait for 2.0.

Yep, same thing is happening on saronia in my linkshell, its a pretty hardcore linkshell and the most hardcore members have done pretty much everything worth doing including myself, primal fights are getting boring and tedius, we have done the 10 minute moogle, darkholds loot is junk, strongholds loot is crap also, materia farming can be done solo and even materia prices have reached very low prices because noones buying any and there is a massive surplus on the wards.

So yeah its been dead the past few weeks all ive got left to do is gathering and crafting achievments to pass the time. There is the occasional hope of doing moogle now and then but it never happens as to many players just dont log on. I cant blame them tbh.

Both Murugan and the OP have some good points here. Ultimately the issues in the OP are in game right now and most people know that. The dev team is having to do two jobs at the moment. They have to build 2.0 and they have to find some way of keeping the existing playerbase interested in the game until 2.0. 1.21 should give us some content, and I expect that my whole LS will come back eagerly for 1.21 in order to enjoy it. That being said it probably won't be long before we've blasted through the 1.21 content and are looking for something to do that will sustain us. In the end the answer is going to be 2.0, as Murugan has pointed out. The patches in between (e.g. 1.22, etc.) will likely be nominal attempts to keep us busy. It's a shame but ultimately that is what we have to deal with while we wait for SE to make an essentially new game that they promise with 2.0.

1.The game is still going through major changes there is no point rebalancing mobs now as the job system and possibly refinements to armour will change it again.

    2. Yes there is a lack of challenge at least untill end game but im sure this will be address before 2.0, I don't think its such a bad thing to make the game easier to reach cap anyway, I agree that lootable equipment is somewhat redundant with the addition of materia but it looks like nothing is being done about that.

    3. See above.

    4. In patch 1.21 they reduced the amount of material a node can give per action and will probably fine tune this before 2.0 hits.

As others have mention the lack of content is the main problem at the moment, this should change with 2.0 because the team will no longer be split between two versions of the game and more resources will be poured into keeping end game content flowing.

I am with you, up there, in hopes that the game will get better. But so far all we can do is indulge, as I often do, and you do in the quote above, in wishful thinking. The fact of the matter is that Yoshida, admirable though his work has been and his intentions are, seems to hark from a completely different gaming culture than most legacy XI players do. And most of the remaining population is comprised by legacy players, that both Yoshida and his team don't seem to be very interested in catering to.

Again, we have no proof, just wishful thinking (yours and mine) that they might get to balance the game before v. 2.0. The problem with an easy cap is that 'the path' becomes irrelevant. And lacking the motivation to do "things" while you're level 20 or 30, the only point of the game will be a race to the top... No point at owning transient gear that will be rendered obsolete in a few minutes. With a lack of motivation for people to covet low or mid-level gear, no economic break is at hand until you cap your crafting class. This doesn't seem very good as far as economic incentives go, for crafters and gatherers.

Again, it's you and me assuming they will produce a denser, deeper game for v. 2.0. I don't think the current problem is the lack of content, as far as the lack of permanency of content. Content in this game becomes obsolete, because they really want to make it easy for people to beat the content. They're petrified at the thought of the gaming community's calling FFXIV "hardcore," the way they labeled the company's previous MMO. However, I remember, in XI, doing the third mission (the one with the ahriman and the dragon) many times over the years, to help friends as well as to challenge myself... slowly reducing the size of the party needed, and reducing also the time of combat; it was always fun. Since the instance was "level-capped" the challenge was stardardized, no matter how high your "outside" level was. After a couple of dozen runs of Dzemael Darkhold, to say nothing of the recent nerfing of the dungeon, all sense of challenge and danger is gone... not very motivating. That chapter of content is a closed chapter for many players, especially the ones that already got the drops. And the ones that didnt... well, they can do better than the Alpine Jacket or the Canopus set by virtue of (not very challenging either) Materia melding.

This basically sums up how I feel about the game lately. Not much to do anymore but craft/gather and keep hoping the update comes tomorrow. :S
