Has anyone ever thought during periods where the boss disappears for a bit, to take Darkside off and then use an Ether? "Super Ether" for example. Wouldn't that be a dps gain?

You are 100% correct! Some top ranking DRKs in clown kefka did just that to squeeze a bit more mana.
Ethers and HP potions share cooldowns with stat potions. The gain from using stat pots like Infusion of Strength Grade 3 are massively more impactful for dps, on top of having similar cooldown to ethers.
That and you could just ask your caster to manashift you during 10s+ downtime if it isn't needed for healers. Even the lowest manashift (SMN) is only like 200mp off from HQ super ether. If anything, supr ether is better for healers who need more mp on demand while refresh, lucid, assize, thin air, aetherflow and whatnot are on cooldown for some reason and you need MP right away.
RL;DR - giant loss over infusion of strength.
Depends, only if you recover more MP that the need to reactivate darkside, and like Rein said better strength potions if you are in to that.
There you go I fixed it for you.
Although real talk yeah ether shares CD with strength pots so it\\'s not a viable thing, but during untargetable moments dropping darkside to regen mp is something you can do.
No an ether wont do since because it takes the same cooldown as a STR potion.
But turning darkside off assuming you will get the 600+mp back before the boss comes back is.
