Ok so we all know MMO's can't be rated due to their online interaction but that doesn't mean they can just add whatever they want into the game. With this is mind I would like to propose a area of the game or maybe even a server where only people above the age of 18 could gather. There could be content in this area that wouldn't normally be "allowed". Things such as drinking and gambling could be added in this area. The adults of the servers can go somewhere they know they won't find a child. It would be a fun place to go and spend some time without worrying about any kiddies.

This idea started out as a joke and still kinda is one so don't freak out here. Take a deep breath and relax before posting.

I don't think the rating would change if characters were allowed to consume beverages with alcoholic names or for simulated gambling.

(looking at Rift for the alcoholic beverages)
(looking at Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy 13-2 for the simulated gambling)

BUT if the effects of alcoholic beverages, hallucinogens, or other drugs are introduced, that would hijack the rating to M.

Kiddies are used more then that.
The only thing which could make it 18+ is adding sex element, whiiiiiiiiich is kinda awkward in a fantasy MMO...

there is no way to police that kind of thing, and like someone said already, I have meet kids 12-16 that act more mature and adult then many 18+ people. Hell one of my old LSs greatest RDMs was a 14 yr.... kid had skillz ;p

I do agree, however it's more of a legal issue (=what rating is for) than a maturity issue.

With that said, I don't think it will happen, if SE introduce such an area they will still have to rate the game as M, since they can't prove if the player sitting at the PC currently is really 18+. Another issue is that the legal age varies between countries. For example, it's 20 in Japan afaik, and 21 in some other countries.
