How Much Did Housing Cost Originally?

For people who played when wards were first introduced, how much were houses then?

I started this game in Jan 2017. After I did the home is where the heart is I made it my singular goal was to get a house, at the expense of story and main class progression. My first house was 3.1 million in the Mist.

I've always thought everything about the housing prices went against every principle of supply and demand. Based on the supply I would think small houses would be like 15-25 million based on location, mediums 40-60 million and larges around 100 million.

So I was just wondering were prices always like this, because the affordability is part of the issue with the system.

I do think houses should be more like trophy items. I had a house before I finished the ARR storyline or left the novice network, which I think is too easy. If I were SE I would have made Wards with high priced houses and then instanced apartments small and large at affordable prices with a community stable and garden.

As you may know housing plots do vary in price somewhat depending on the location of the plot. Good locations cost more than poor locations.
Unsold plots also drop in size over time.

Prices also used to vary between different servers. Older and larger servers had higher prices than newer and smaller servers.
Pricing was unified between the various servers back in patch 3.3. See https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodes...02b2896cea7f52 to see how prices changed at that point.

Houses are more than just trophy items. Gardening requires a house, and there are crafting items you can only obtain through gardening (or by paying a lot on the MB). The airships that FCs can build and send out also requires a house.

I don't know what the situation is like on your server, but on many of the smaller servers there are small houses easily available - so the demand is clearly not all that high.

There also used to be quite a lot of trade between players for housing - something which was frowned upon by SE, at least when done large-scale. There the law of supply and demand was in full swing.
The changes where one cannot buy an abandoned housing plot immediately largely eliminated this trade between players, just as it was supposed to do.

Trophy was probably the wrong word. I was just shocked to be able to get a house at the point of the game I was at when I got my first one.

I said I would have put gardens in apartments.

Thanks for the link. It interesting to see that prices on some servers actually went up.

You can read the 2.1 patch notes to see all the original housing prices (it's about 1/4 the way down and the pricing depended what server you were on), but it was as high as 625 million for a grade 1 large if you lived on Aegis, Durandal, Gungnir, Masamune or Ridill

Edit: I might as well just include it here:

Besides higher prices you also need to keep in mind that gil was a bit harder to come by back then!

I think we paid about 18 million for a medium house in the Mist on Odin back then - and by "back then" I mean in march 2014, a few months after housing had been released.
Months, that me and our FC-leader basically spend crafting and adjusting prices on the marketboard for 8, 9 hours a day (students with to much free time between semesters...) to make that kind of money. We were both highend crafters - not the most dedicated ones on the server, but able to craft all the 2-star-stuff; we reacted to every "Please meld my pre-relic for me!"-shout and crafted in different cities to cover more ground.
...and it still took us months to get those 18 million together.

Today I can make that in 2 weeks without trying and in one day with trying.
The prices should have went up to reflect that, not down to give everyone the illusion that they can earn a house - given the shortage of houses, thats just not true, yet people think it is because they have the required amount of money lying around...

Wow. That's a lot higher than I thought it would have been. I assume wards were ghost towns in the beginning. 625 million, man.

I think they should have left it the way it was. With the prices being determined by the economy on the server. The demand for houses would be much lower. Then they would just need to improve apartments as opposed to constantly needing to add wards to keep up with the demand for houses.
