That isn't the exact line I remember having (I distinctly remember The Pillars! alas human memory is more than fallible) but as of right now, that's the only thing I can find too--in French he also mentions injuring his left eye:

Japanese is just "something happened". Extremely vague and open-ended, since Japanese isn't exactly a language for talking about your problems.

I distinctly remember being able to talk to Thancred between quests and him saying his eyepatch was for fashion, not injury. Cus I remember being annoyed with him for letting me think he'd lost an eye for as long as he did, while also being exasperated b/c *of course* he did, its Thancred. I remember saying to myself "...Yeah, nevermind, he's fine."

Unfortunately I do NOT remember when I talked to him. It was not in a cutscene, it was not a result of a dialogue choice box. It was just a *right click on character, character talks* moment, which I was getting a lot of in Stormblood cus I made sure to click on every scion that didn't have a marker above them before I advanced to the next quest step. This exchange might even have been in the pre-4.0 patches.

I'm pretty sure it will be the same quote we're discussing.

Anyway, just because he said he's wearing it for fashion doesn't mean it's actually the case - it just means he thinks it's a believable excuse. If you've responded by thinking "of course Thancred would do something like that", it was successful.

Clearly, whether he does or doesn't say his eye is just injured, or he's just wearing it for fashion... it's not the truth. We've seen that something strange has happened to his eye.

From that screenshot, it looks like the German quote is equivalent to the English one I posted earlier. So either the English is unclear or the German inserted information that shouldn't be there. More likely the fault of the English version though.

Still, any way it's phrased, I'm pretty sure it's an excuse and not the actual reason he's wearing it.

Except it isn't, because the one you posted is part of the quest dialogue. The screenshot shows dialogue that's available after completing the quest, as you can see in the screenshot (MSQ completed, hasn't picked up the next one from Alphinaud yet).

We know from the scene with Krile that while his eye is apparently undamaged, it's not the same as it was before.

We know he is covering it for some reason. Is there some kind of magic involved? Do people find it unsettling? Is he *really* trying to pick up girls out in the wilds of Dravania?

Assume he has a serious reason to keep it concealed, but doesn't want us to worry.

How to explain it? "Ah yeah, you know me, I'm doing this to impress women."

And we roll our eyes and go "seriously, you would do that, wouldn't you?" and drop the subject. Questioning over, he doesn't have to explain what actually happened.

Or, y'know, he actually does keep wearing it to impress the ladies. It absolutely fits his character, and not every little thing needs to have some serious, deep mystery behind it.

There is minute detail about changing the past from 1.0 that might come up. Or not, but here is the thing.

Back in 1.0, when meeting Minfilia for the first time, we got an echo vision. Normally, during an Echo vision all we do is watch and witness, however during this particular instance Minfilia felt us and saw us.

Perhaps in this way we can alter the past a little. It would take several people very skilled with the echo to pull off but it’s a possibility. Small possibility, but it’s fun to speculate.

I don’t know, just throwing out ideas.

Back in 1.0, that was how the Echo worked all the time. You could walk around in it and talk to people, but not change the past at all. It was also really confusing since the only main thing different about those Echo scenes was the "Echo specific" background music.

How the Echo worked when viewing the past was deliberately changed for 2.0 so that it was super obvious when the Echo was viewing the past and it never happens when we are not in a cut-scene. But at neither point in 1.0 or 2.0 has the Echo ever been able to change what has happened already.

There's also the strange thing in 2.0 about Cid seeing us in the past and echo!WoL floating in the sky and giving him his goggles back. And then he suddenly had the goggles(and his memories) in the present, when he hadn't, before. I still don't fully understand that, honestly. Weird Echo is weird.
