No he doesn't say that. (But you're the second person to misquote it in a couple of days.)

He first reappears already wearing the eyepatch, and from Dreams of the Lost, where you've just reunited with him (and are probably thinking "what happened to your eye?"):

I know what you're thinking, but really, you needn't worry. It will only lend credence to my tales of heroism. Besides, battle scars are to maidens what loose morals are to gentlemen. A definite bonus.
The game plays with deliberately not remarking on it a couple of times (eg. Tataru greets him with "Thank the Twelve you've returned to us! But what happened to your old outfit?").

And then later when he infiltrates Castrum Meridianum with Krile (the scene you are thinking of), he's not wearing the eyepatch, and you can see that his left eye has changed colour. (It looks blue to me, though his NPC data indicates that it's white. Either way, clearly very different to his original hazel.)

And that's 'it'. No further explanation or comment.

I assume we're getting one at some point.

We also have to remember that Yoshida stated in an interview that this trailer was made to feel different and more movie like. So it could be that some of those things we saw in it are just there for the trailer but not in the game. (Still nice to see derplander switch jobs like that)

I don't think thats the case. They talked about going from a more american style trailer where the trailer follows the story of the movie to create an abridged form of the story to a european style trailer where the trailer creates its own story that while similar, may be misleading. Not misleading in the sense of showing incorrect material but misleading in showing things in a different order to create a different feel to the story. Everything in the trailer should be in the patch but I don't think it will play out as the trailer is implying it will.

Either way, I can't wait to see more...so I guess the trailer succeeded for me.

WHAT IF...and this is baseless speculation...everyone who gets into Shadowbringers is sucked into another world and separated from everyone who hasn't gotten to that point, and the world visit system is just to help us hang out with friends?

Hmm...nah that seems complicated. After all, they didn't even do that with ARR when we could go wherever we wanted instead of being trapped in Coerthas...

And if you talk to him right after completing that quest, he will also tell you that he almost lost his left eye. As in, he didn't lose his left eye, it got injured.

I also wasn't directly quoting anything when it comes to the "impressing the ladies" part, but I'd have to dig some more to find the exact quote.

Can you find that quote about almost losing his left eye? Because I can't, even though I vaguely remember it from my first time through the game - although from memory I think it was one of the "teases" I'm thinking of where he alluded to it but didn't explain it. And are you sure he said that, and about his left eye specifically? Not something like "I could have lost an eye back there"? Which of course could be a matter of fact statement or could (and I did) take it as ironic and with a "but I'm still not explaining the eyepatch" subtext.

I'm sure I've talked to him at every opportunity, and now I've looked through those first few quest scripts, and can't see that line anywhere. Unless it's further in - past the grand melee which was the last quest I completed - I don't know where he would have mentioned it.

In any case, he still entered the battle already wearing the eyepatch. Whatever the reason is for wearing it, it didn't happen then.

That said... I thought to check the screenshot where he's apparently just emerged from the Lifestream - and both his eyes are normal then. Also he seems to have his new hairstyle. All a bit odd, possibly an oversight, or possibly not. Again, awaiting further explanation, which I assume we'll get at some point.

(Hmm, another random thing I noticed while looking through different versions of the NPC for dialogue... as well as the major changes to his appearance with his 3.X model, his iris size changed from large to small. Probably an art thing rather than an in-character physical change, but still interesting.)

I might remember it wrong but wasnt that quote more a text bubble when you got near him at one part of the story line? I just kinda remember that I found that always a bit bad for a reason because an eye less is less sight. But would not 100% be sure if it was there.

    Edit:

    Some new brain stormed idea.

What if there is no time traveling or dimension traveling at all (kinda hard to imagine after they said that there is a reason why they were not showing more of the new maps for shadowbringers) but we simply remember the words from Arbert and try to stop a calamity after we tipped over the balance in that battle against Garlemald in 4.5 (or the dungeon). Since the first shard was not destroyed right away and still had enough time left so that the WoD came to our world and done their things there, maybe we just see the first signs of a flood of light like some of these light creatures appearing everywhere (Thancred who is awake is then fighting against one of them) and we try to stop this by giving the world the balance back in form of a WoD.

Arberts words (if its him) about "history must be unwritten" could simply be a poetic way of saying "dont let what happen to us, happen to your world". This way we would not need some kind of time travel. It could also be that we are getting echo visions of the first shard, how their world looked like and then either understand the consequences or even believe that we just saw a glimpse of the future?

    ---

I still dont think that we would get a time skip. The one from 1.0 to 2.0 had the WoLs be left in a time chamber to wait for their return thus any kind of sudden time skip would need to explain what our character has been doing in that time because it would be utterly strange to log in one day and suddenly years have passed. Because then our character would have done things alone and not because we controlled them. That would be imo quite a huge thing in terms of playing our own character. And even if they make us fall into some other dimension thus we are taken out of the time skip itself, they still would have the problem with old quests and having a whole world that is different depending on when you are in the story. People would change over the years but if you do old quests then they are suddenly young again. I know that they have explained that each quest has a certain place in time thus we have already done them at that point even if we are doing it later but still that would feel so bad for me.

There's a screenshot of the quote in this post: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...=1#post3623756
While the screenshot is in german, the poster also provides the translation for it ("Es war ein beschwerlicher Weg, und eine Unachtsamkeit hätte mich fast mein linkes Auge gekostet." -> "It was an arduous journey and my carelessness almost cost me my left eye.")

From that screenshot, it looks like the German quote is equivalent to the English one I posted earlier. So either the English is unclear or the German inserted information that shouldn't be there. More likely the fault of the English version though.

Still, any way it's phrased, I'm pretty sure it's an excuse and not the actual reason he's wearing it.

I distinctly remember being able to talk to Thancred between quests and him saying his eyepatch was for fashion, not injury. Cus I remember being annoyed with him for letting me think he'd lost an eye for as long as he did, while also being exasperated b/c *of course* he did, its Thancred. I remember saying to myself "...Yeah, nevermind, he's fine."

Unfortunately I do NOT remember when I talked to him. It was not in a cutscene, it was not a result of a dialogue choice box. It was just a *right click on character, character talks* moment, which I was getting a lot of in Stormblood cus I made sure to click on every scion that didn't have a marker above them before I advanced to the next quest step. This exchange might even have been in the pre-4.0 patches.
