Because this game really isn't one that supports alt-play that well. and it kind of expects you to play just one character.genuine question here, for the people affected. I haven't seen a post from anybody saying that a solution is making an alt on the other datacenter to stay in contact. Why making an alt is not an option? With an alt, you can stay in touch, you can rejoin the statics leveling it up. I think it is worth it, if I really wanted to keep contact, and leveling an alt is pretty fast in this game
My main is the only character I want to do things on. I want to raid with my Gilgamesh friends on my main character to gear my MAIN character. Not my alt. Likewise, I want my MAIN character to be the one that has the house.genuine question here, for the people affected. While this can work for some, it means giving up everything your main has; cash shop items, titles and etc. Not to mention, if you're apart of a static, you're likely not going to be able to dedicate much time to multiple characters.genuine question here, for the people affected. I'm going to try. Let's hope I don't get too burnt out.
For me, I would have to level up my alt on Balmung to stay with my current group (though it has since been confirmed that our MNK and MCH are leaving, as they do not want to be on Crystal), and I lose everything I have done on my main as a result: all my achievements, my mounts, my titles. And yeah, maybe I can get them back on my alt, but I like to make my main a priority. I also do not have the time to raid on two different characters at this time due to other things I have to do outside of the game, much less progress an Ultimate fight on them and I like the Ultimate raids.genuine question here, for the people affected. I actually already though about that yesterday. And I said to my mates on Discord "hey, if they shuffle servers, it'd actually be an incentive to make alts. But also, it'd be nice if they provided jump potions like, one set per account only usable on the next character you create."genuine question here, for the people affected. But instead we got "free world transfer". That seems cheap, especially on Chaos, since we had DDoS issues almost everyday for a month with absolutly no compensation whatsoever, big routing issues with Level3, and the fact that Chaos is the only Datacenter in Europe, which means deeper roots on servers and a lot of cross-server friends. It was like a single big community that is going to be split in half.
And all we get is a free world transfer.
Yay...
I guess making an alt is still an option. But man does it hurts not to be backed up by SE on that one.
Which doesn't even come close to cutting it, IMHO.
Even if I want to forget friends/etc., world transfer sucks. OK they remove some of the limits, such as the Gil cap, but that's really not the issue. Having to rebuild everything you've built up is; Your Free Company and Housing. Do they even remove the Free Company Entitlements restriction with this? Because if you're a small Free Company with a House moving server? Good luck.
If there was a system where you can just transfer your Free Company, complete with everything attached to it over, I'd be slightly more OK with all this. Losing all progress on Airships/Submarines though, watching your old plot get taken while your grinding for Free Company Entitlements though? No thanks.
Did they announce anything at FanFest that remotely made it sound worthwhile? I haven't been paying full attention but from what I've gathered 5.0 is set to just be more of the same... I glanced a Q&A in which they basically said they'll keep sticking to this same old tired formula... So what are we gaining from this exactly? Heck even if they announced something like a reworked, newer and better Hamlet Defense (something I've wanted since 2.0 and think would work perfectly as Grand Company Squadron content), I'd be very sceptical just based off recent history... Diadem and Eureka haven't been all that amazing, nor has Deep Dungeons (HoH added new auto-win mechanics with Primals and a bigger room, not the greatest development in the history of gaming). They'd need to pull out something absolutely amazing for me to go "OK, this is worth it", and instead they seem to have pulled out... Nothing...
I think they mentioned some new Gold Saucer stuff? Even if we jump the gun and assume that is Blitzball... Lords of Verminion has still left a bad taste, so forgive me if I expect a complete disaster. Might be fun to enjoy with my friends though... Oh wait...
Yeah, I really don't think they could announce anything that would make this seem worthwhile... Any initial hype would instantly be tempered by "but I wont get to enjoy playing it with...", Blitzball or Hamlet Defense could be a literal gift from God and it wouldn't matter when half your friends are gone...

This is the single worst news I could imagine... Literally just deleted any hype (which was minimal anyway since I expect just more of the same with 5.0 already) fanfest had created and threw me into a f*cking bus... As if a free transfer + gil limits/housing fixes anything... How damn out of touch with your playerbase do you need to be for this to be considered anything but a disaster? I pray they halt this decision because it is potentially a game ender for me. You don't split up friends like this, you don't ruin already ailing queues like this... This is such a monumentally bad move... All for what? So there is no Rabauhn Savage in 5.0? Got some bad news for you, that's still going to happen.
Overpopulation, at least with Chaos, isn't even the real issue... Now you'll have two data centers barely held together with gum and string that'll still break at 5.0s launch, that will still suffer the same network issues... The population is small, the issue is that the hardware/networking using for the data center is just awful and basically always has been... I look forward to 6.0 adding a third EU data center with the exact same issues, perhaps by 8.0 we can just make it a solo game with one data center per player? All still with the exact same technical problems Chaos currently has, of course.
Crazy idea, maybe use some of that Mogstation money to instead invest in better server technology/networking? Nah? Go for the cheap option and just get more of the same? All while screwing over your playerbase? Unbelievable...
Even now, statics have trouble finding new members, queues are long (lol PvP), Farm Groups could be more... And this little population is to be splitted in two. That... will be the death of decent raiding, PvP, and all those trying DPS queueing.
That's fair. I will admit the whole static thing is a bit weird to me. Having people on different servers do Savage together I mean. I came from WoW so the concept of moving servers based on where the people who want to do certain content are (or recruiting people to move to your server when necessary) is standard operating procedure.
