Couldn't they have made job quests that center around learning magic from monsters and made it a regular job?
I just don't get the point in making a job that is completely useless in current content forever its a waste of development time.
The fact that this got past the design phase is baffling and makes me question the direction of the game
Shouldn't be baffling.
They wanted to add the traditional Blue Mage, which has a design that doesn't jive with the design of other classes and balancing for content (obviously they could have, but is that really Blue Mage or just a caster with a Blue Mage flavor), and have decided to add its own content to the game as its own (solo-focused) "current content."
Expand your definition of "current content" outside of the narrow "level-cap dungeons and raids" and suddenly it's not at all confusing.

RNG Mage confirmed!
i think it's interesting, and they did it bc people always were asking for it so they delivered...but blu never seemed like something that would fit in an mmo, at least not one that uses the tank/healer/dps triage. monster actions means all kinds of actions and it doesn't really make sense to lock it behind one of those three roles. and there are tons of people who enjoy playing the game by themselves while being able to communicate with other players so it's fine. this is something of an interesting timekiller. just adds something to do. possibly while waiting for queues, even lol
and it's not like blu is the only "new job" we're getting, so??? stop crying?

Well, I called it being a glorified minigame. But 49 actions is less than even I predicted with my cynicism. Covers mostly iconic abilities, not miscellaneous.
Jolly gee.

Blue Mage turned out exactly how I expected it to, since this is a MMO. This is why I didn't want Blue Mage next.
It really feels like the devs thought the only way BLU could work is if it's exactly like it is in FFXI, and never even considered changing it to actually fit into XIV. Every other job (even Red Mage) got massive reworks from what people might be used to, in order to make them work for this game. I'm not sure why Blue Mage is the one thing they decided absolutely couldn't be different from XI.
They've talked at length about this before, so we know that they DID consider whether or not it could fit in XIV, or whether or not they should change it to add it as a traditional job/class to fit XIV, with the preference being that it be added as the true Blue Mage, and not a version that "learns" abilities once via quests and plays like the other casters in this game.It really feels like the devs thought the only way BLU could work is if it's exactly like it is in FFXI, and never even considered changing it to actually fit into XIV. Clearly this is their decision, that they did not want to change it to fit the traditional job role, and so rather than leave it out are adding a new set of content designed specifically for it so they can add it under it's traditional design.
Honestly, some of ya'll are being really narrow minded about how classes can be added to a game like this.
