Game keeps freezing up have to restart my computer

Had this happen upon a restart of the game, didn't let it get as far as it normally does but it shows it using significantly more RAM than it normally will.


Edit: After this, the game has started to 'leak' every single launch since. As this will inevitably be the suggested advice of the Support, I am reinstalling the game to see if that fixes it, if it does not, we'll have that information available.

Edit 2: A complete re-install did not fix the issue. Whatever it is, seems to be part of the 4.45 update, but it's not consistent with all users. That said, while corilation doesn't equal causation, I, Veraki, and another individual on Reddit with the same issue, have something in common. AMD Processors and GTX graphics cards. My guess, something in the most recent update may not be playing well with either the processors, putting load on the RAM instead for some ungodly reason, or the combination. Me and Veraki for example both have FX-8000 series processors. An 8320 for him and an 8120 for me. Veraki could you tell us who makes your RAM and Motherboard? That may also be related. Mine's Corsair and Gigabyte respectively.

I tried to replicate this and wasn't able to get the game above 2GB of RAM usage. Where were you in the game when you took this screenshot? How long did it take to get this high? Was it immediate?

Can you also provide a System Report? Simply go to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display.' The system report won't give details on the RAM so can you also provide what kind of RAM you have?

Additionally, can you link that Reddit thread? We can't moderate Reddit obviously, but I'd like to gather some more information on the issue.

@Veraki, if you can provide that screenshot, that will help us figure out what is going on. Additionally, I'd like you to try a clean boot. Simply open the task manager and select the 'Start up' tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. Also avoid having any necessary programs open while you play. At the very least, this will help keep other applications from using RAM while you play.

The memory leak happens immediately upon launch, before even getting to the title screen. Normally the game doesn't eat more than 800-900 megs of ram, but when the leak happens its at 2 before even getting to the title screen. I'll get you the system information once I close the game, not looking to do that right now as it's currently running fine. Reddit thread is here https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comme...ry_leak_issue/ though this user seems to not be having the issue anymore (or hasn't posted about it after a reinstall). This last leak seemed to happen after a crash (DX11 related by the error page) and didn't stop until I restarted the computer, making it seem like whatever caused the crash was persisting through relaunching the game and a full system restart was needed. But this issue is only affecting FFXIV any other game or program I launch doesn't have this issue.

I'm thinking the issue may stem from it trying to read/write to the Hard Drive but an error is causing it to do it to the RAM instead.

LordAlastor, when you reinstalled the game, did you delete the locally saved data (located here My Documents > My Games > Final Fantasy XIV)? This part is not deleted when you reinstall the game.

Veraki, You can upload it to a website like Imgur and link it, that may be the easiest way. Also, have you tried to reinstall the game?

No I did not, I did not know the system files were not removed when the game was uninstalled.

Edit: A second complete reinstall removing the files in the documents>my games>ffxiv folder and...

Whatever this is, it's something that was introduced in patch 4.45 as the game didn't do it before that patch, and nothing, absolutely nothing on my system has changed beyond that.


and for comparisons sake this is what the game looks like when I can get it to launch normally (usually requiring a system restart)

minimal CPU and RAM consumption. From my observations, and my knowledge of computer systems I'm thinking its a read/write error where the game is attempting to write to the HDD, and instead writes to RAM, likely because the HDD has as lower write speed as it's not an SSD.
