    Question about loot etiquette

I was doing alphascapes with some friends (4-5 of us) tonight. One of them won a bolt from v1 and casually remarked that they were going to use it to buy an orchestrion roll to put up on the MB. I asked "are you serious?" and they replied "of course". At least two of us, me included, actually needed that bolt to upgrade our gear. I got a bit salty about it and left early, both in protest about their behavior and as a damage control measure to prevent myself from saying something I'd regret later.

Is it considered acceptable in FFXIV to need on something you are going to sell? In previous MMORPGs I've played the general rule has been that you need on items you are going to use yourself and greed on those you're going to sell. Needing for alts or equippable NPCs is kind of a gray area.

Why would it not be? If it is not a static or PF group with predefined loot rules then everything is FFA. That person doing the content for money is not something you should shame them for nor are your motives somehow better. All I hear is "WHAAA someone got loot that could have gone to me."

It's hard to say. Honestly, I see it as rude for them announcing it. But at the same time, i see you as immature for leaving because of it. Not that I don't agree, just that you could have still made it to the end and just seen if you would have gotten and rolled, then if you didn't get it just ran again like anybody else. Let him do what he will and do what you do. Some people are a-holes and spend their time trying to make money on games. Let them be them and not worry about how others play. It's a lot more fun that way.

If you can need then it’s fair game. Alphascape loot is still restricted anyway, that’s their one and only piece from that boss this week.

Did that person help you complete the content?

Did that person actually put their effort into the content?

Did that person sink time into the content?

If you answered two of those questions with "yes", then explain to me why is it unacceptable for someone to compete in loot table rng system just as equally as anyone else in the party?

If you're capable of healing DRK back in ShB (or any tanks), then you'll heal EW DRK just fine.

I mean, it kind of sucks that happened, but consider things from their perspective. How many runs of that fight do they need to do before they get a party that doesn't need a bolt?

How do you know that they aren't going to use the money from the roll to gear up as well? :P Instead of getting an accessory, if the roll sells they can get money to buy a wider range of gear pieces.

Not only that, gear becomes obsolete fast, whereas money always has a use in ffxiv.

Let's flip it the other way, someone could get mad at you for taking a bolt and wasting it on gear that would be replaced in a few weeks, when it could get things more permanent, like a music roll, or money that can be used any time later. Like gearing other classes that are leveling, or training crafters.

Everybody has their own goals they want to achieve in the game, you wanted gear, they wanted money. Who's to say one person's goals are better or more important than another's? To get angry over it and leave early is a waste of time and energy.

If Normal Mode was something like Savage where you are allowed to see 1 drop a week, and, if you get it: Great; if you don’t: Oh well. But Normal Mode you can run as many times as you like to get your weekly loot. So I wouldn’t be miffed about this, tbh.

If it wasn't agreed upon ahead of time to work that way its fair game. Its no different than a BRD trying to "claim" all the tank gear in a dungeon just because they want it to level a tank or for glams. If I was the tank, I would still be allowed to need on that gear if I didn't explicitly agree to let them have it ahead of time.

Generally, it is (or at least was) considered bad behavior to roll need on things you aren't going to use...

But as far as I know it's not bannable or anything, so you can't really do anything about it. Specially in duty finder.
Private groups, you could always make a list of people who do that and kick them out if you see them...
