Tera's idea is not that new... there is a similar game called Dragon Nest are using exactly same battle style.
I played that for a while, but it's really not for me since I get motion sickness easily. XD (sometimes even when I ride choco, in XI or XIV, and stare at screen too long, I'll get dizzy too.)
I didn't see Dragon Nest doing well tho... similar graphics (dragon was 3 years ago), battle style... just Dragon Nest doesn't have animal char and are all instant based... at least in my first 3 days of dizziness playing experience.
I do see it's potential, but it's really back to personal preference... it's really tiring to smashing buttons all the time...

Fair enough. It's to be the pivotal point in FFXIV - it will determine the success of the MMO and it's future. SE's got to sell it - and sell it well.
As a consumer all I'm doing is checking what they've got to offer, keeping track of their plans, and deciding for myself whether I find it interesting or not.
Nobody can argue against it being the most important milestone in the foreseeable future of XIV though.

Also I don't plan on playingCataclysm.... I meanrift... I meanDC Universe... I meanSW:TOR... I mean...
what game is this thread about again?
i participated extensively in highly competitive endgame ffxi linkshells. i participated extensively in highly competitive endgame WoW guilds. i tried a lot of stuff on the side, and none of it could deliver that challenging, competitive endgame experience i was searching for. i came to ffxiv hoping for competition and challenge, for content that not only kept me busy but felt rewarding at the same time.
i haven't really felt much of that in this game. what little endgame we have is far too easy already, yet is still met by people calling it too difficult. we also seem to have an extremely vocal opposition to in these forums to anything resembling competition.
i'm not a roleplayer. i don't care about achievement points. i want my skills tested, against challenging content and other skilled players. i want to feel a sense of accomplishment from what i do. in ffxiv, we have a grind for the sake of having a grind. it's not hard. it's just there to act as a treadmill. this leaves me with no tangible feeling of satisfaction, no matter how quickly we beat a new primal or get 7/7 weapons.
ffxiv, for me, lacks passion and soul. and it really bums me out to say that, because i so desperately want this game to be good. i want this game to have epic story, something to do whenever i log on, and something to test my skill and push me to play better all the time. and i understand yoshi and crew are working toward that, but in the meantime... there just isn't much to keep me interested other than loyalty and hope for a better 2.0
my LS is really excited about tera and gw2. i was very skeptical about both, and remain skeptical of gw2 for many of the same reasons i was skeptical of swtor (and every other new MMO on the block). i give swtor credit for having a great questing system and good story, but then what? there's nothing else to the game. it's kotor with a faux-mmo architecture. there's no challenge. what little competition there is, is broken. and there just isn't any content. gw2 looks to be more empty "single player game in a massive online setting" crap, but maybe it will surprise me.
tera, though. i only gave it a shot because some LS members had played it back during korean beta, and were really talking it up. and boy were my misconceptions about the game shot to hell after a few hours. questing is old-style 'grindy' which may put off some people, but it makes sense in this game because you need to learn to play. and sure, it's fairly repetitive for a while, until you hit 20ish and can start doing the first instance and grouping up for BAMs. this is where the game REALLY takes off. the combat is fluid, responsive, twitchy and FUN. it takes perception, judgment, reflexes, skill. and that's a breath of fresh air to a person that's been aching for a new challenge.
doing 35+ dps on ifrit is cool, but it's not really hard. doing 80+ dps on moogle is cool, and a bit harder, but still doesn't compare to the kind of challenges i experienced in ffxi, like getting server first Bahamut V.2- and *certainly* doesn't compare to pushing for server first SSC/TK/BT/Hyjal/Sunwell progression in WoW. perhaps i'm a masochist, but i miss working at Alone in the Darkness (25) for weeks and weeks. the frustration sucks, sure. but that feeling of elation we got when we finally pulled it off- nothing in ffxiv compares to that. and it sucks.
tera seems like the best candidate right now to rekindle that sense of fun and excitement about new content. it seems like the best candidate for progression/competition-minded players. people who want to push their skills to the limit.
that's not to say it's going to be the end-all be-all of MMOs. i'd really, truly, honestly LOVE for FFXIV 2.0 to be that. nothing would please me more. there's a certain magic i feel in FF worlds that other MMOs lack, so if yoshi and company can pull this off, giving us that magic PLUS actual meaty challenging content to keep us on our toes- i'll be happy to throw my money at square until the servers shut down.
but in the meantime, the sad and brutal truth is simply that tera, for now, is just flat out a better game. the beta alone is better. i honestly didn't even *want* to like the game, because i do feel a sense of duty and loyalty in regards to ffxiv... but i just can't delude myself to reality.
i haven't had fun playing this game for a while now. and i'm having an absolute blast with Tera.
when i log out of ffxiv, i log back on because i'm bored and there's nothing else to do. i try to keep myself busy with little projects so i'll stay involved and not give up on the game entirely. and then i log into Tera, and i'm having fun, and i'm finding myself fiending for more whenever i log out.
i have my fingers crossed that 1.21 will deliver on some serious content. i have my fingers crossed it will get the ball rolling and keep us involved until 2.0. that's what i *want* to happen. but i'm skeptical. so i'll be here for every patch, i'll be here for all the new content, and i'll be here at least until 2.0-
but in-between patches, and in-between content... i just don't have much to keep me logging in to this game. tera is a better game right now, and that's probably what i'm going to be occupying myself with until 2.0.
Tera excited me till I saw the armor but I respect that they work on the kinks so well. I wonder if they leave a thread with tags like : nerd rage anger butthurt hippies mad furfags rp rage besaid crybabies.leads to the dark side
up and allow whole threads to stay open against the ToS made with the sole purpose of harassment up. (goes to teras forums for a hf hr)Sadly.. I dont think they do
Im not a SE fanboy, I wont say they always do everything right but I can say I play everyday, I love the game, always have minus its issues, but it horrible that the only time we get our way is by complaining enough.

Ah, but will facing north-by-northeast at 2:45 a.m. while the moon is a waning crescent result in a 27% increase in your chances to synthesize HQ mythril ingots!? That is real the question! ~Fernehalwes~
Hmm... True. I hope FFXIV succeeds. So I won't feel like all this Gil I've been accumulating and having accomplished nearly everything to date wasn't a waste.
Thanks for the positive posts Noctis. Been awhile since we talked and I respect your views as always. Good to see other posters that aren't posting for count+ or just to troll threads that others took the time to originate.
Wish you well :3

tera isn't popular in korea because it lacks that eternal, retarded uphill treadmill grindy aspect that korean MMOs are known for. the pvp also inhibits a player's ability to run around randomly ganking everything in sight- which is another hallmark of korean MMOs.
in spirit, it's quite western. and the combat system is better than any i've experienced.
people say it lacks content/endgame, and looking at it objectively it absolutely does............ compared to established games like XI and WoW. compared to xiv, though? there is *far far far far far* more to do in tera. and, imo, you have a lot better time doing it there.
again, i've stood by xiv for a while now, and i want it to succeed. and i'm not abandoning it. but tera is just better in nearly every facet.
the only thing i could say it lacks is community, and community is one of the main reasons i was looking forward to xiv in the first place. but the community here sucks, too.
in xi, yeah HNM camps sucked. but sitting around for hours competing for claim, you got to know the people on your servers FAR better than you do in this game. there's no competition. everything is sectioned off in neat little instances where nobody has to fight with each other over anything. there's not even any reason to interact with anyone else outside of your group. and that sucks.
my LS rallied for 1.20, we beat moogle first day, we stuck around for about a week afterward... and then one by one we all completely lost interest. by the time they hotfixed the exploit most of us had completely stopped caring anymore. nobody even cared about speed run. we were all playing other games.
then in our boredom in between tera beta events, we decided we had nothing better to do... so we scheduled a couple moogle speed run attempts. most of us hadn't even been playing at all in the last month+, and it still only took us about 4.5 hours of attempts to get a sub-9 minute kill. so all it accomplished was rubbing in our faces the fact that this game is too easy and completely lacks any kind of tangible competition.
and now we're back to not caring anymore.
is tera considered a 'failure' in korea? yeah. but the japanese are enjoying it, europe is excited for it and it could be just what the doctor ordered for people who want something engaging that isn't WoW.
myself and my LS are more than happy to explore the game's possibilities while we wait (less and less patiently) for someone to inject XIV with the things it *really* needs *right now*.
(hint: NOT useless twaddle like player housing)
Yoshi/SE,
You see? Your players are dedicated with passion to what FFXIV "could" be. It's been said many times many ways. I don't know how much you realize this, but players really do care. Even the immature ones that post like 2nd graders!
You've got us all offensive and defensive about your project. Frankly we wanna know more. I personally think you need to give us more sales pitches. What exactly COULD End Game FFXIV look like? I know you withhold information for legal reasons but there must be more info you can give your players.
Just a thought :3
