The Concept
So I had an idea for a Boss fight and accompanying quest line that would bring some fun and unique elements to the table by playing on the existing mechanics, while at the same time bringing back some classic Final Fantasy monsters, offering options that will help keep crafters in high demand, and possibly help with the currently abyssmal item drop rate (You know it's true lol), without overhauling anything. Below I will be outlining the following concepts: Boss design/mechanics; multiple quest lines; weapon/armor/item rewards and mechanics; story relations and more. Please forgive the crude sketches as they are for design purposes only.
Weapons/Items/Armor
I'm going to be covering just the basic design and stats of this items here first to get them out of the way, as the methods of obtaining them will be covered in the quest and battle sections.
- Damascus Blade - Unique - "The rare metal used in this cleaver displays an unprecidented level of skill in metallurgy."
- This is the drop item from the chest at the end of the battle. Only 1 can be posessed at a time and it IS tradable.

- This is the item recieved in exchange for the Damascus Blade during the weapon quest line. Only 1 can be posessed at a time and it IS tradable. There is 1 available for each Disciple of War and Disciple of Magic class. Ex: Lancer's Mastery Seal

- This item is crafted by a R50 Blackmsith using 1 Damascus Blade + 1 JOB Mastery Seal. Essentially 2 Damascus Blade will be needed for this final product. Weapons: All weapons contain an additional effect I am calling "Rancor." When it procs, Rancor is a non-elemental, unresisted set amount of magic damage based on your enmity level.Example: Gladiator A has Flashing Red Enmity and Rancor procs on his auto-attack against Ifrit. He does 6+50 points of damage for a total of 56. Lancer A has Yellow Enmity and hits Ifrit for 15, his Rancor procs and does an additional 25 points of damage. Lancer B has Green Enmity and hits Ifrit for 16, his Rancor procs and does 10 points of damage.

Don Tonberry - The Boss Fight
The fight itself is pretty straightforward, there's one large Tonberry with a crown on his head and he slowly shuffles around the battlefield, dashing quickly to his targets every time he attacks. What will make this fight fun, challenging, and memorable are the Enmity and damage mechanics, as well as the asthetic details. Here I'll explain.
Don Tonberry- No Elemental Weakness - High Physical Defense - High Magic Resistance - Vulnerable to Debuffs
Time Limit: 30 minutes Retry Timer: 5 minutes Victory Timer: 15 minutes
Achievement for Winning: Grudge Settler; Title: Wiseguy
- Regular Attacks
- Don Tonberry's regular attacks deal damage in proportion to his target's Enmity level (as a numerical value, not by color) - Variable Damage "Doink!"
- Special Attacks
- Imminent Rancor: TP; Single Target; High Damage: Deals damage in relation to 200% Enmity (as a numerical value) to the target with the second highest Enmity. Resets Enmity for that target only.
- Shared Grudge: TP; Area of Effect; Low Damage: Deals damage in relation to 25% Enmity of the highest Enmity target to all targets within a circle range of that target, and resets Enmity for the highest Enmity target only.
- Everyone's Rancor: TP; Area of Effect; Medium Damage: Deals damage in relation to 50% Enmity of each target individually to all targets regardless of range and resets all Enmity to Green.
- Absolute Grudge: 50%HP Mark 1-Time Ability; Special Damage: Drops everyone's HP to 1 regardless of current HP, Buffs, Range, or Enmity and fully resets Enmity on all targets.
- Dialogue
- Depending on the ability Don Tonberry is about to use, he will recite a line of dialogue as a 3 second warning before using the move.
- Imminent Rancor - "Don't think I've forgotten about you.."
- Shared Grudge - "You're all as much to blame.."
- Everyone's Rancor - "It's time to reap what you've sown.."
- Absolute Grudge - "The end is nigh.."
At the conclusion of the fight a chest will appear in the same manner as the Primal battles. The chest may contain a Damascus Blade per adventurer.
The Questline
I could write all the exact dialogue for each quest if asked, but for the sake of condensing this section I plan on just outlining the general idea of the story.
Quest Start
Keeping in tradition with the previous instance battles I figured that Louisoix was as good of a start as any. The quest can be started anytime after achieving the Grand Company Rank of Sergeant Third Class.
- Reward: ~2000XP ~300GC Seals
- Louisoix explains that due to the catastrophic events that have been occuring as a result of the coming of the Seventh Umbral Era, the Lamia (You know what these are!
) have run low on hunting grounds for food resources and have started encroaching on Mistbeard Cove. While the invading Lamia have been small in numbers and perfectly manageable, you have been tasked with traveling to Mistbeard Cove to investigate something strange that has been reported as a result. Unusual creatures have been seen stalking around the Cove and fighting with the Lamia, but seem to disappear without a trace before anyone can determine what they are or where they've come from.
- Upon arriving in Mistbeard Cove you will notice a new NPC near the Aetherial Gate named Bucaneer's Servant standing in front of what appears to be a small tunnel in the wall surrounded by tiny footprints. Next to this NPC is a ??? that when examined states "The tracks of some small creature can be seen all over the floor." There will also be new Hecteyes monsters in various places in the Cove, as well as 5 Lamia NMs. Bucaneer's Servant confirms the rumors that the Lamia have been fighting something, and that the men have been whispering rumors of legendary Tonberries. He suspects that beyond this small tunnel lies the Tonberry's home, and asks you to gather the organs of a Hecteyes so he may craft some Tonberry Bait. He further states that the Hecteyes are the Tonberry's favorite food, and that the Lamia have been hunting Hecteyes, making them scarce. He suggests finding a Lamia in order to procure the Hecteyes organs, and explains that he will need 1 each of a Hecteyes Heart, Hecteyes Liver, Hecteyes Lungs, Hecteyes Shank, and Hecteyes Eye Cluster to make the bait.
- Your task now is to hunt down and kill the 5 Lamia NMs to obtain the 5 key items. Each Lamia you kill when attempting this quest for the first time will have an accompanying cutscene at the conclusion of the fight where a normal (no crown) Tonberry appears and finishes off the Lamia. It will then start chowing down on the Hecteyes organ until it is startled and runs off when it notices you. After completing the quest at least once, the Lamia will no longer have cutscenes attached to them and will drop Hecteyes Eye's instead of the key items.
- Once you have all 5 key items, return to Bucaneer's Servant and exchange them for a new key item, the Tonberry Bait. Examine the ??? while in posession of the Tonberry Bait to start the battle.
- When repeating this quest, 10 Hecteyes Eye's may be exchanged for the Tonberry Bait key item. In addition to the Lamia NMs, Hecteyes may also drop this item whether you have started or completed the quest or not.
Obtaining Weapons
- Speaking to Louisoix while in posession of a Damascus Blade AFTER completing the main quest at least once will trigger another dialogue option where he comments on the blade and the rareity of the metal, and suggests that you take the item to the Blacksmith's Guild in Limsa Lominsa.
- Speaking with the head of the Blacksmith's Guild in Limsa Lominsa while in posession of a Damascus Blade AFTER completing the main quest at least once, as a R50 Job will trigger the option to have the item made into a JOB Mastery Seal. The NPC will comment that with some extra material and enough skill, a Blacksmith may be able to create something spectacular using the seal and materials as inspiration.
- A R50 Blacksmith may now combine the JOB Mastery Seal and another Damascus Blade to make Rancorous JOB Weapon Plans. Speaking with the head of the Blacksmith's Guild again with one of these in your posession and requesting the weapon be synthesized will trigger dialogue about how no Blacksmith in their right mind would attempt to create a weapon so vile, and that none here have the skill to attempt it anyway.
- Speaking to the other NPCs in the guild will hint that a legendary blacksmith once left the guild over an arguement about his weapons being "creations of evil." He was last seen in the U'ghamaro Mines.
- In the U'ghamaro Mines, once past the first gate and near the Southwestern coffer you will find an NPC by the name of Marasame. He is the legendary blacksmith spoken of and has traveled to the mines to learn the weaponizing mechanical secrets of the Kobolds. Offer him the Rancorous JOB Weapon Plans and he will gladly craft the appropriate weapon for you.

So that's pretty much the idea I had in a nutshell. I know what you're thinking, compensation right? Well actually the best compensation would be to see this be made and come to life. Though an exclusive in-game title of "The Godfather" and a Lodestone History achievement for creating this would be awesome. And I wouldn't be opposed to a job offer either haha!
If my fellow adventurers have read this far and would like to see this idea come to life, please "thumbs-up" my post and make it known. Devs if you read this and like the idea, lemme know. <(^_^)>
Happy adventuring all!
