Yikes gathering is way too confusing

I just hit level 70 in the laziest way possible using pretty much only leve quests and wow I am so beyond lost. I've been googling guides and trying to do research for nearly a week on almost any spare minute I have between college and work and I still cannot make a dent in the wall of confusion.

I can't even finish my class quests...because my gear is bad? So I try to find how to get better gear...but that requires gil that I don't have, so the only way to get the gil is to farm items to sell, which requires gear...so do I just have to go grind dungeons for several weeks until I have the millions needed to buy a crafted 290 set? I can't even get the collectibles to the minimum range needed to turn in for the 220 gear?

I don't understand how to start the process of gathering, it seems like I have to invest what amounts to 4-5 million gil just to get the most worthless set of gear, and then grind for 6 months at a time for 3-6 tiers of gear after that?

I am so beyond confused, everywhere I look its 4.5 hour guides here, 32 page 'beginner explanations' there, all of which start off with "this guide assumes you have 320 gear level at least" or something, or its just a straight up spreadsheed and I feel like I should just go study calculus or open a small business at that point

Is there some kind of "gathering for dummies" guide out there some people used? At this point I feel like the only reasonable way is to just buy everything outright and avoid scrips completely, I can't wrap my mind around this progression system at all. Can someone please just explain the VERY STARTING step?

Its not that I'm impatient, I just...can't figure out what the heck I'm supposed to do. This is way too confusing. I literally learned VLSM and binary counting faster and easier than I am able to learn gathering progression on FF14.

It seems like using guides has caused your confusion. Since this is an online game which evolves over time I think it's best to avoid using guides unless they were written within the last few months (latest patches). There's nothing about the current dol/doh gear progression that take weeks to grind through. If you cannot afford the best gear and aren't a crafter, maybe a crafter friend could help you gear up at a lower price than the marketboard. You could also try melding materia onto the cheapest lv70 gathering gear to give you leg up in the mean time and see if you can earn gatherer's scrips currency. Avoid referring to collectable rotations written before 2017 since one of the actions had its GP cost and effect increased.

I was told you can only turn in collectibles for scrips 12 times a week? So by that calculation, it makes it seem like the maximum I could get is around 400-500, so it seems like doing that to get a full set would indeed take many weeks. Is that wrong?

Custom Deliveries (to Zhloe, M'Naago, or Kurenai) are collectibles that can be turned in 12 times per week (6 per person, so you will always miss one). You gain at least 100+ Red/Yellow Scrips (depending on the collectability, not including bonuses for certain items) per turn in, so you can easily make 1500ish scrips in a week.

Regular collectibles can be turned in as much as you want (i.e. The Rowen's House of Splendor's tab).

Get the best vendor gear you can for cheap. Shouldn't be more than 200k tops for a full set.

Gather loads of basic materials. Ores, Sands, basic Logs, that kind of thing.

Yes, the big bucks are in the top-end materials but mid to low end mats still sell very well. Hell, even stuff like level 20 materials still sell by the thousand each day.

Sell things in stacks of 20. People will be more inclined to buy a stack of 20 at 1000gil per item, than a stack of 99 at 700gil per item.

You'll soon make enough for the crafted set, but in the process you will also learn how gathering works as well as doing your job quests.

People are too impatient these days, always wanting to get the big score without putting time and effort in. Let this be a lesson.

You should be able to complete the level 70 class quest with roughly level 65 crafted gear(the kudzu/tigerskin set)... if not even slightly less gear. If you need to make some money before you get the ability to gather the newest mats, then the key is to spend a little time with your servers marketboard. Look at what you can gather now, look at how much it sells for and how often it sells, and find a couple items worth targetting. Then go get them, sell them, and repeat until your cash is in a better place. Some of the good mats will be lower level then you might think. The classic example is Alumen - mined at level 15 but used by leatherworkers until they get up into their 40s(being that this example is used a lot to explain the theory behind which types of mats to look for, on many servers its been over-farmed and the price isnt worth gathering). Some mats have longer shelf life(like alumen), some are used in great quantities(if the whole market sells out twice a day youre on to something), some are inconvenient to get(id rather pay someone then bother), some are only for specialty recipes that sell for a ton(think furniture).

Stella was right, theres more then one way to get scrips from collectables. The weekly custom delivery NPCs pay very well, but Rowena's people are available 24/7 and have no limit. So you want the overly-simple version of starting out on collectables? Ok. Get 600 gp(more is better, this is the absolute minimum as the rotation uses 600 points). That might mean better gear, it might mean melding, it might mean using food when you gather - for now, how you get there isnt important. Your overly-simple(no RNG) rotation is Discerning Eye Methodical Appraisal DE Meth DE Meth gather(1-3 items depending on node, 450% appraised). On a node with extra swings(this uses 4 steps, so without extra swings you get nothing) you could do DE Meth DE Meth Utmost Caution Meth Meth gather(1-2 items at 500% appraised). If this doesnt get you to the minimum to turn something in then you need more perception on your gear. Once youre more comfortable later on you can learn the Impulsive Appraisal version(potentially better returns, involves RNG). Side note: Using all(or even most) of your GP for each node either means downtime or cordial chugging, so plan accordingly.

Gear ... you can get any crafted left side gear NQ iL290 or below from a vendor. Tools also, but NQ tools might be cheaper on the MB. Jewelery is not vendored.

With that, and minimal melding, you should be able to do collectables and your class quests.

If you hit 70 with levequests, how can you not finish your class quest ?

I mean, you have minimal gear or else you wouldn't be able to do gathering levequests

Edit : do you mean the level 70 quest only OR the ones before too ?

You can't level gathering with a levekit, except maybe fishing.
