Game should display grey numbers when you miss a positional

right now the game gives no feedback to new players trying melee out and this just causes a good number of players to hit lvl 70 and join your DF runs as a melee without being aware that there is positionals on the class they are playing as.

Monster hunter world does this when you attack specific spots of a monster where more critical spots would give an orange number

I think this would be helpful. Obviously any positional are listed in the tool tips, so it would be kind of hard to hit 70 and be doing some sort of rotation without ever having noticed positionals, but still, as you are getting a feel for things it would nice to have a nice visual reminder pop up.

It's usually a simple matter of checking the tooltips on new actions, but not all jobs with positional requirements have their positional requirements from the moment they get a relevant weaponskill all the way until 70. In the case of SAM, Gekko and Kasha don't have positional requirements until 52 when they get the trait Kenki Mastery, whose description is nonspecific: "Increases Kenki Gauge when landing select weaponskills." At this point, a SAM would need to check every single weaponskill if he wanted to determine which "select weaponskills" were affected, and even that would first require that they care enough to check. But since Kenki Mastery doesn't say anything about positionals, a new SAM might assume that kenki was simply added to certain weaponskills without their mechanics changing, and to be honest, that would be a fair assumption.

Other jobs where positional skills always have positionals from the start, there's not really an excuse for making it to Lv70 without knowing that weaponskills have positionals.

I'm currently levelling monk and this would certainly help. Not really with learning, because I feel pretty confident in where I'm meant to be for what, but mainly just to see if I landed it or not due to latency. So I know if I'm moving too soon, or too late, perhaps if that time I had to dodge the AoE meant I hit the flank instead of the rear, etc.

Would really like to see this. In lots of Savage stuff tight stacking is required, making positionals a huge annoyance during those timeframes. Would like more feedback from the game concerning those considering I’ve been playing for awhile now, and I still don’t have a clear idea of the cutoffs for positionals relative to boss size (how far inside a large boss’ hitbox can I be and still land it etc.)

That's a funny post, but kind of irrelevant. Like, it doesn't particularly help with finding that "sweet spot" on huge enemies like Midgardsormr. Plus it's a means of feedback for learning players without getting into the parser debate.

It's completely relevant. It clearly shows front, flank, and rear on a target.

The size of the target is irrelevant. "Rear" is the gap in the target circle. You just need to half step back and forth over the spot where the circle ends. Here are some more explicit visual aids:

You can be farther inside, as long as you're inside/outside of the cone drawn by the green lines, but there shouldn't be any reason to be so far inside the boss that you can't tell if you're hitting flank and rear or not. Even super tight donut attacks still let you stand on the circle, and if you're in a party doing savage, they should all know where the flank/rear boundary is and stack to accomodate if necessary.

It's irrelevant because nobody is asking where the flank or rear is at. They're asking for in-game feedback on whether or not you hit the positional requirement at said flank or rear.
