I know that Sargatanas is one of Noel's swords in XIII-2, I'm guessing that SE adapted the name since the name does sound like it could be a pair of Japanese swords. (i.e. Shinobigatana) I think you may have found the actual lore behind the name though. Curiously, Sargatanas is also the name of one of Monica's swords in Dark Cloud 2.

Edit: found this on Yahoo answers.

Sargatanas is a noble Demon Major (fallen Seraph), who rules his city-state, as much as is possible in Hell, after the pattern of the Above. In contrast is Beelzebub, the Fly (appointed by Lucifer, who has vanished), official ruler of Hell, who does all in his power to keep it a place of extreme evil and torment. In a moment of illumination, Lord Sargatanas seizes the wild aspiration that a demon might be pardoned and readmitted into Heaven, if only he could prove he has thoroughly renounced Lucifer's rebellion and re-embraced the Light. The siege of Hell's capital, Dis, becomes the path to a forgiveness desperately hoped for.

Which gives us a clue to his origin:
A seraph (Heb. שׂרף, pl. שׂרפים Seraphim, lat. seraph[us], pl. seraphi[m]) is one of a class of celestial beings mentioned once in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh or Old Testament), in Isaiah. Later Jewish imagery perceived them as having human form, and in that way they passed into the ranks of Christian angels. In the Christian angelic hierarchy, seraphim represent the highest rank of angels.

Hmm, I really like the idea that SE adopted the hebrew name for a demon because of "gatana," which is how you spell "katana" when it's a suffix combined with another word in Japanese. Linguistic coincidences like that amuse me a lot xD

I wonder if Japanese players will be spelling it サルガタナス or with some kind of slang like サル刀ス (the second one uses the kanji for katana lol).

It is spelt that way (JP FF wiki http://ffdic.wikiwiki.jp/?%C9%F0%B4%...CA%A5%B9%A1%DB)

But no, they would never use what you said second. Generally contractions are made from the first 2 syllables of a word. So maybe 猿saru (=monkey). I know they use 鯖saba (=mackerel) for "server" (サーバー).

It's hard to find lore for Sargatanas because its not really a memorable item...unlike excalibur or masamune.
However , it's quite unique to FF9 , which is more important as it keeps the theme of the current names.
