Why is it optional? Because Edda's story could have been considered complete at level 16. This other(lesser) group of adventurers went into a dungeon similar to the one you just did but they didnt all come back(good thing youre so tough). Adventuring is dangerous, maybe they should get a job on the family farm. The end.

But rather then end it there, a writer decided that maybe instead of meekly going back home to be "normal" the disaster of their group led to something more... interesting. For the main storyline's purpose, all that had to happen was us being shown to be special(and reinforcing how dangerous this is to help explain why we need to do so much). But given the option to look in and see how things have progressed without us can be fascinating(if well written). Some people stop thinking about things as soon as theyre over, others will wonder endlessly what happened next after they left. The hard mode dungeon revisits are for that second group.

And since someone called out Tam Tara(hard), ill call out a fave of mine. I love me some Lost City(both visits). The music is beautiful, the lore involving the war of the magi is interesting, the setting is almost like an alien planet, and lets not forget a certain boss who gets to play a bigger role in the Mhach raid series(and i still need to get me a morpho).
