[Mac] MFI Gamepad (Steelseries Nimbus) - D-pad and Menu button not working

    Hello,

on the FFXIV Mac client, if you use a Steelseries Nimbus gamepad, the D-pad and the Menu button don't work even if you try to calibrate. There's simply nothing happening when trying to press these buttons. They work fine in other games or on Windows (with MFI gamepad driver).

I found this thread, another user has the exact same setup and problem: http://forum.square-enix.com/ffxiv/t...directionnelle Because it is on the French forum, maybe it did not get any attention, but this issue is still ongoing.

    Thank you for reading!

Edit: Forgot to mention, I am using macOS Mojave 10.14. The game is itself is running fine without performance issues.

Good afternoon and thank you for posting on the Final Fantasy XIV Technical Support Forums.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this controller is officially supported. This will make the support we can provide a bit limited.

Have you got this controller to work in the past and it's only acting up now? Or is this the first time you've tried to use it?

In either scenario, I'd suggest reinstalling the controller's drivers (if you have not done so already) and trying a clean boot. To do a clean boot, restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The Apple logo appears on your display. Release the Shift key when you see the login window.

We hope we can be of assistance in helping you enjoy the exciting world of Final Fantasy XIV!

    Hello, thanks for your answer.

As this is an MFI controller the drivers are included in macOS and as such cannot be reinstalled. It does work fine with other games, it only doesn't work properly with FFXIV.
I couldn't find a list of officially supported controllers for the Mac version of the game. Could you provide me with one? Seems like there's no other way around the problem.

    Thank you for the reply!

The Mac version of Final Fantasy XIV is only compatible with Xinput controllers. For more information please check the play guide on the lodestone:

    Hope to see you online!

Would be great for that information to be added to the system requirements shown at the store (Mac version isn't free after all). However, I found a workaround that seems to work ok:

    1) Install the Steam client for Mac and log in (create an account if you don't have one)
    2) Go into Big Picture Mode and set up the Nimbus as a "Standard Gamepad" there
    3) Add the FFXIV client as a Non-Steam game and start it by using Steam
    4) Go into the FFXIV controller settings and select "Controller2", which should be the simulated Xinput controller. Then calibrate it accordingly, the D-pad and Menu button should work. (Of course you have to skip Select button and R3/L3 as the Nimbus doesn't have the physical buttons, but you can bind them to keyboard buttons in the settings. Make sure to disable direct chat mode for them to actually work.)

It's not a perfect solution but seems to work for me. IMO games on the Mac should support MFI gamepads out of the box, as that's the Apple standard, but I hope this workaround will help someone in the future.
