I feel like "rare monsters that drop gear" is already covered, with things like Odin and Ixion. It's glamour rather than equipment, but that's what lasts in this game.

Even then, the system only works well for as long as they're current. Drumming up enough participants for the Couerlregina boss in Dravania is hard, on the rare occasion that the FATE is even on - and in a year of playing (and taking three characters through ARR) I have never ever seen or heard of the Behemoth spawning in Coerthas.

I do get somewhat what this post is asking, but at the same time, FFXIV is a game that has deliberately eschewed rare/unique/rng (to an extent, I'll explain what I mean.)

Many MMOs have that "rare" element to them - treasure chests, rare material nodes, unique bosses that drop unique items, rare quest starter drops, minion drops, etc. While I haven't been back to WoW in a thousand years, I remember farming for my firefly minion, I remember having to farm mobs in Outlands to get engineering schematics. In LotRO, humanoid mobs of a certain level+ had a chance of dropping legendary weapons, rep items, etc. And, to an extent, I kind of miss that. I enjoyed the thrill of exploring knowing that I might be at the right place at the right time to find a treasure chest or an enemy. I might be going about my everyday questing and get a minion drop I didn't expect.

Unfortunately, that's a dying enjoyment on several levels. One - as was mentioned elsewhere - botting. It's always been a "thing" but it's a lot more prevalent now than it used to be. I used to be able to do laps of Azshara to get treasure chests & rare mining nodes - those would be dominated by bots now, they are in SWtOR already. The same people who use hunt-spawn-alert mods would use them for other rare monsters, too - and when only one person has a chance to get the item why would they share? Two - griefing. It was already a thing in WoW. Sticks and stones may break my bones but it's also tiring to be /spit emoted at, or harassed via tells, because you got to a node before somebody else, or a treasure chest, or an enemy.

XIV doesn't always handle this stuff in the best manner (lord, look at the bots), but in their effort to make the game more "equal," they had to drop a lot of this. Sure, gathering bots are annoying, but they're not stealing your nodes, and locking you out of crafting items you need. (The marketboard is a different subject.) Hunts, rare fates like Ixion, Odin, and Behemoth, Foxy Lady give rewards to anybody who participates, it's not a case of "tag it first and get the rare drop". There are no rare drops, so if you participate, you'll have the ability to get anything you need. Sure, there's still RNG - that pair of gloves you want might not drop for 50 runs - but it's not RNG of the exploration/rare type. They have brought it back at a minor level with the cold lockboxes in Pagos and the sacks in PotD/HoH, but even that affects a very few things, and everyone has the chance to farm for them.

In a way, I miss it. I miss farming for rare drops, fishing for lockboxes, etc. But on the other hand, I don't have the kind of time I used to have, and I enjoy being able to get most of what I want in this game just by putting my time in. I enjoy being able to go out and gather timed nodes without getting griefed. And I do kind of hope that won't change in XIV.

I do actually miss the NM's of FFXI. i killed many of them even without seriously camping. it just meant i'd go afk in valkurm dunes instead of jeuno in the hope that i might glance a emporer pop or ssg for a chance to find the joyeusse nm (forget its name) sorta thing. got lots of good stuff from them and in many cases there were other versions of the same drops you could obtain from bcnms or buy on the auction house..
i also miss NMS and things like the fomor codex , sorboro, bee stinger, gration or other stuff where you use a random drop from certain mobs at a specific location to spawn a particular boss NM. added things to do out in the world. not locked up in instances.

I think the problem these days is people complain if they're excluded from anything.. you can see it with hunts and things in the game now. how people kick off when a hunt is pulled and killed before they could get there "omg sooo toxic why couldn't you wait...." hell there's times people give me flack for killing a b rank for my weekly bill and not telling anyone else where it was....

If you don't mind things that only grant bonuses in specific areas or only have glamour value, then we have a few super rare things now in eureka pagos.
Cassie Earrings, Optical Hat, Speed Belt, Behemoth Pelt (exchange for helm), Copycat Bulb minion, shiver emote. These things are so rare that they don't exist for the majority of players. Can't guarantee that they won't eventually become commonly accessible items in some way.

Towards the end of Heavensward patch series they did actually experiment with making a rare drop weapon with the highest potential of any weapon in the game, at least until new stuff was released in the SB expansion. They were called Coven weapons and very few people were lucky enough to obtain them.
Now that people stopped playing The Diadem, there is not even a chance of getting them any more because a large amount of players are needed to beat the enemies, but the drops are weak now anyway and do not have unique appearances so there's no glamor value.

Just been speculating about the things this game could use... or not? I dunno, whats everyone else's opinion?
If your thinking like we had in FFXI with rare drops etc.? I doubt that will ever happen. The only way it would happen is if once you get the drop that it's stats increase with every update to keep it up to par always. That is an option but I doubt they will do it.
