Like I said, I've gotten COMMENDATIONS as a tank. People give me grief only 30% of the time. What I am wondering about is why this is the case and why won't EVERYONE just tell me I suck?

If 90% of the dungeons I did ended up as a failure because of my lack of fundamental skills, then yes, I'll change for the better. But I'm really doing fine without them.

Generally you're not supposed to lose aggro period, yes. That's exactly what I'm saying. Your goal as a tank is supposed to hold and keep aggro at all times.

The problem I'm seeing in your post is your only considering yourself in those runs when you lose aggro. You don't like certain skills, so you won't use them, but in those cases, the mods turn their attention to healers and dps. In most dungeons, that is incredibly irritating to deal with, especially when it happens multiple times in a run because in many cases, the tank is neglecting their primary job.

I hate to say it, but commendations, while nice, don't really mean anything. You could be a rdm who held top dps and healed more than the healer who died multiple times to a boss... And that healer ends up with all three comms. It is nice to be recognized, yes, but I wouldn't put as much stock into those as you have in this thread and your previous thread.

The thing is, this is not about you in dungeons. This is about the party as a whole. You need to understand that concept to begin to be a good tank.

A quick follow up to something about your initial post that I overlooked.

When pulling a single target (like a boss), your RoH combo will generate much much more enmity faster than double flash. So when initiating on a single target, a decent opener would be:

-Shield Lob
-Fight or Flight
-Circle of Scorn
-Fast Blade
-Spirits Within
-Savage Blade
-Rage of Halone
-Drop Tank Stance, go into Sword Oath
-Fast Blade
-Riot Blade
-Goring Blade

etc etc.

This isnt the optimal Paladin opener, btw. But since youre tanking in dungeons, its not a bad opener. Im positive, however, that better paladin mains have better openers, but this kind of opener will pretty much ensure youll have threat almost 100% of the time. Youll only run into issues if your DPS is really good and/or really geared. In the event that your dps is great and are having a hard time, start using RoH again to maintain aggro. Remember, your #1 job is to be the tank and keep aggro, so do whatever you have to do to make sure that stays the case. If that means lowering your dps to maintain threat, then thats what it means.

This also, just as a point, is more damage output overall than double flash. Flash is perfect for aoe aggro management, but not so much for single target.

You get commendations because you're a tank. For a lot of people all a tank or a healer has to do is just breath and they'll get a commendation. A good portion of the player base won't try to correct you for many reasons. One could be that they don't know the ins and out of basic tanking. Others could be that they simply don't care and just want to get the run over with. Then there are those who would comment but don't because when they do even if they're being super nice about it get a rude response back or ignored. They then probably say screw it to themselves and keep silent the rest of the run because it's not worth arguing over or they feel they'd get more improvement talking to a wall. There has been a lot of good advice and I'd hope that you don't ignore it.

It's not so much that I don't know how to tank. It's more like, I don't understand it.

Seriously... In dungeons, 40% of the time people are neutral about me, 30% they love me, and 30% think I'm garbage. For example, these past few days I've spammed that Shisui of the Violet Tides dungeon about a dozen times. The first 11 times I got a bunch of commendations. And the last one, one of the players said the following...

You... (dramatic pause) ... are garbage.

Here's my basic formula for drawing aggro...

Move forward. Once the monsters are close, I use flash twice, and then fight.

90% of the time I draw aggro successfully. But for some reason, the rare times I fail, I get scolded severely by the other players.

I don't understand. Why the inconsistency in people's view of me as a tank? If I suck, I should suck all the time. But no. Whenever I get complimented, I get insulted as well. It's really bugging me.

I never use that ranged shield attack and I never use that weak-butt rotation that increases enmity. I've gone this far without them and I prefer to keep it that way.

What are your thoughts about my confusion?

Be in Shield Oath. Not optional until you're comfortably holding aggro.

Aggro the first mob with Shield Lob. It generates a lot of enmity.

In the middle of the pack use Circle of Scorn, lots of enmity right there.

Then use flash, twice.

There you go. You now have enmity. If you're in a group that outgears you (I find this with BLM often) focus their target with the Fast Blade > Savage Blade > Rage of Halone agro generator.

You say you've go this far without them... well it sounds like you're doing a terrible job and are simply getting lucky by teams that can carry. Work on your playstyle, but most of all work on your attitude.

It doesn't really matter if he's trolling or not, he fails to interact with people on a fundamental level. Can't give a guy like him any benefit. He's gotta take of his own attitude before he starts to learn anything from anybody.
