There were still things they could have done to flesh out the story.

Explore different factions of the resistance. Maybe contrast Conrad and M'naago's group with a more fanatical one. Seems like all of the potential bad egs/extremists were conveniently taken out with Ilberd's ploy which is disapointing.

Explore the idea of maybe some ala mhigans who grew up under the empire maybe not wanting to over throw it. Explore the skulls and other pro garlean ala mhigans. They completely wasted that storyline by just having them all get blowed up by Fordola and the cannon.

Explore the price of the war, resources and blood, in more detail, question whether the price of the conflict is worth it. Maybe have some moral ambiguity like Revolutions implied in some of its lines.

Flesh out more of the Seeker tribes and sects of ala mhigans.

Explore the story of the mad king and ala mhigo's fall in more detail.

There's plenty they 'could' have done.

Did that cannon bother anybody else? Like what was the point of having it there... Granted I have no idea how long ranged it is, but it seemed like the only target it had was their own damned tower... There was nothing else of note for it to shoot at in sight, who okayed the development of that thing?

Everything about Ala Mhigo felt a bit rushed to be honest, I get that Zenos wanted us to come but the fact that Garlemald made zero use of its air superiority really rubbed me the wrong way... Start of the expansion we see warships flying around Ala Mhigo, by the end of it they're all gone...

I'm not sure, I think it was only ever used the one time. Well partly because of Estinien sabotaging it and keeping it from firing again as we retreated.

But all of that was done some in 3.4-3.5 others in 4.0 and others in 4.1 or the monk quests
I mean Fordola flashbacks said more than a thousand words

Remember that is show, don't tell. With one flashback they said more about the inner conflicts of the new generations vs old ones.
Also the price of the revolution was well explained in the first quests, since Ala Ghanna ppl didn't want to join the revolution
And Ilberd was idd an allegory for the extremists, but that goes as far back as 2.55 and the fact that in 3.5 he essentially forced the GC to declare war with his plan. There's nothing else that was to be said

Can't say that Ishgard revolution was handled well though. Compare to Ala mhigo declaring their change from kingdom to republic happening with a round table of all the ppl of the nation, Ishgard was told to us to have become a republic at the end of 3.0.
That topic should've needed some more time to cook imho or at least show us the deciding moment, then have the brotherood of light attempting a coup, not just a coup happening out of nowhere.
Even showing us a council that is to decided what to do about the knowledge of the drgaonsong war, while it is the right thing to make ppl know the truth, public order must be considered too, that's why Gridania is not yet releasing what happened to Vainchelon at the hands of the Ala mhigans.

I'm wondering if 5.0 will have Ala Mhigo added as a city proper, and gateway into Ilsabard itself.

Good question, since having Garlemand as a city for the expansion seems fishy to say the least. We do need a way to propel us into Ilsabard and atm there are no safe heavens like Kugane that we are aware of right now

I can't wait to get out of Gyr Abania, personally. It's just not very aesthetically pleasing to me and seems a poorly mashed together mix of cultures. And that awful mix does not even stay consistant. I don't enjoy the dry, dusty landscape and sparse greenery. Most of the buildings are closed off.

I felt no compasion for any of the NPCs here. They either directly or indirectly have reaped what they sowed.

Well, you know that Scarlett just has to have her Sister Ray! Kya ha ha ha!!!

Seriously, though, the gun clearly has mechanisms in place to allow it to traverse side-to-side, and from its position it could potentially arc shells to anyplace in the low-elevation portion of the Peaks. The steep cliffs plus a gun that could blow the bajeezus out of anyone approaching those cliffs makes for a mighty defensible position. It's likely more of an artillery piece meant to lob shells over long distances - not intended for direct fire against nearby targets (as was the case with the tower). That said, direct fire CAN be a devastating use for an artillery piece in a pinch.

That's why we had to go into Castrum Abania, to make sure the cannon wasn't going to impede the Eorzean Alliance's advance.

I’m with you in this. Especially the mad king. They hardly even covered that.
