yeah that would work from most items i can think of, might have some exceptions (I have not seen a lot of styles )in 1.0 there was no clipping on trails. We all know how that went.
But honestly when I'm doing glamor stuff. It drives me mad.
It's even worse that may take the time to put a hole in the gear but then not have the follow the butt movement.
1 quick options would be in gear animate tail down a few Centimeter. So it starts moving beyond the gear.

By the time 7.0 drops I’ll be a Viera again so it won’t be an issue
why would u play a character with a tail just to hide it....Personally I would love to play an Au'ra or a Miqo'te, but I simply can't. Why?
The clipping. By the twelve, the clipping.
I thought it was really cool how some armor, like the level 60 PLD artifact, included a little opening for the tails, but it seems that this has completely fallen out of fashion. None of the sets seem to take tails into account any more, which causes them to clip into everything. Heck, even the racial armor for the (female) Miqo'te itself has issues like that.
So would it be possible to get another button in the character menu (like the display/hide weapon/helm ones) that lets you hide tails?
"Tails are an intended part of the race"
Granted, but I'd argue that clipping is not. So between (A) reworking 99% of the armor sets to include tail slots or (B) adding a "hide tails" button, I'd say the latter is the far more economical solution.
What do you think?
Unless the only, singular, defining detail that sets aura apart from other races is a tail, that's shouldn't be hard to answer. The option to hide tails would also parallel existing options that we have for gear which I haven't seen complains about. It's really hard to see why a request like this would be surprising.
as much as i understand what youre going for and where youre comming from, the tails are a big part of the identity of the race, they make it easy to distinguish the race, and i think they wanted it to be this way, since this game has allways been about "insert animal" people, showing the ears and tail just adds to that astheticUnless the only, singular, defining detail that sets aura apart from other races is a tail, that's shouldn't be hard to answer. They are absolutely, but I don't see how an option to hide them diminishes this. Adding an option will leave the choice up to every individual player, so no one has to worry about losing an important visual aspect of their character. Rather than being detrimental, having more control over how the tails are presented will only increase their importance. There can be many ways to do this like clothing/armor specifically for the tail, or emotes or settings to control tail position or movement. Hiding the tail would be a part of that for one of many reasons, be it a part of a character's history (half race?) or motivation (an aura/miqote is in hiding and pretending to be a hyur).
The only threat I see to the established aesthetic is the removal of tails completely, but no one is asking for that.
