I prefer text only for in-game communication with strangers.

    Reasons why:
    1) Salty gamers who troll to cope with their IRL issues would use it to insult others that much faster
    2) do we really want to hear other people breathing into their mics/doing private things when we don't know them at all and are just trying to get our dailies done
    3) If you are a female gamer, the likelihood of harassment goes way, way up the second a male gamer whom you do not know can identify your IRL gender. I barely tolerate that from FC mates and guys I know (usually I snarl at them, actually), so the idea of strangers pulling that nonsense makes me want to hack their computers, find their locations, travel there, and set them on fire.
    4) Related, if you're a female gamer and you're the tank, the likelihood of some male gamer deciding you don't know what you're doing and either trying to lecture you how to play or just ignoring your directions goes way, way up. Yeah, that's a thing.
    5) people annoy me in general, I don't want to hear them
    6) social anxiety
    7) you can't record it if someone is verbally abusing you, making it impossible for GMs to help you if this type of behavior is going on
    8) people talking makes it hard for me to concentrate if I can't completely ignore them

    1) ignore list
    2) push to talk (it's always been a requirement when we did 40 man raids in wow)
    3) again ignore list
    4) once again, ignore list
    5) You won't join my ultimate group then
    6) mute yourself?
    7) again ignore
    8) You can always explain this to the group, in progress runs chatter should be kept to an absolute minimum and only talk about mechanics during the fight so everybody has 100% focus.

Many headsets have a mice mute button or you can always use push to talk so you have control when your voice is being recorded or just disable your mic in the voice chat software.

I've had some female gamers who had the harassment thing (happend in Destiny sometimes) I always booted the people who did this and add them on the ignore list so they would never get in our runs again. Never has become a real issue.

It doesn't became a problem if you don't let it.

Letter from the Producer LIVE Part IX Q&A Summary (10/30/2013)
Q: Will there be any maintenance fees or other costs for housing, besides the cost of the land and house?
A: In older MMOs, such as Ultima Online, there was a house maintenance fee you had to pay weekly, but in FFXIV: ARR we decided against this system. Similarly, these older MMOs also had a system where your house would break down if you didn’t log in after a while in order to have you continue your subscription, but this is a thing of the past and we won't have any system like that.

Game does not allow blacklist while in a dungeon. I an not even sure what the point of this post is, it is like you are trying to defend reasons why we can have it when we know it is not happening.

Naoki Yoshida: We do not plan on offering official support for voice chat. To explain that decision, the idea of talking directly to other players with your own voice and making it a requirement to do so will not necessarily be a good thing for beginners and new players and many will see it as imposing pressure or causing them unnecessary stress.

I am personally a veteran online gamer so I completely understand the importance of voice chat but if we were to make it an officially supported feature then there is a chance that some players would start to demand that others use it just because it is an “official feature”.

Of course, we will not be prohibiting external voice chat via Skype etc, so individual player communities can still sort out their own preferred means of communication!
Yoshi-p addressed your "counters" for number 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, and for number 8, that explaing would not matter, see what yoshi-p said, so this suggestion is a clear no, there is no point in trying to counter AmemeAmeklin's post

There are so many 3rd party services that can and will do it better than anything SE could implement. Especially given that the ongoing DDoS on each of the datacenters would ALSO impact voice communication. Given that there are enough bandwidth issues for just gamedata packets, I would never want to add additional bloat going to/from SE's datacenters for voice when something like Discord works so much better. And for those who don't like Discord's approach, there's always Ventrillo, TeamSpeak, or Mumble servers people can run on their own. Or things like Google Hangouts, Skype, or FB Messenger if all the players know each other.

From what I heard about the built-in voicechat in WoW, it's garbage and rarely used. Perhaps that's changed since its release, but with the added benefits of literally any other service, there's no reason to expend development costs to force a half-working solution into FFXIV when Yoshi-P has already stated he doesn't think it should ever be required.

No, voice chat is the worst.

I hated it way back, when it first started with teamspeak/ventrilo.

I don't want to hear mouth-breathing people, who seem to be in really poor physical condition, laboriously speaking to me while they listen to music and their kids make noise in the background.

    -----------
Isn't a third party one an avenue to "swatting"/whatever that is? I've heard of this, will someone will not like you and call the police/whomever. In third party ones they can see your IP address, correct?

If I'm just playing with people, in FFXIV or Wow, people can't see my IP address.

I don't even use discord which most people seem to. Therefore, in game voice chat is a no go for me if implemented. Surprised so many people replied with having social anxiety as I also suffer from it.

I remember playing ESO. It was annoying when people had music playing in the background and broke the feeling of the game. I don't want to go into Limsa and hear rap, country, metal, rock, etc... instead of either the music I'm listening to or the ingame music.

Even if it is a necro, I've seen this in Novice Network as a question recently from new players.
