If it wasn't for the Final Fantasy name, I would have never tried the beta. A beta that I loved to play regardless of the bugs. After all of the negative reviews, I'm not sure I would have bought the game. So if it weren't for the name, I'm not sure I would be playing, which is a shame because I really do think that this is a good game. Hell, I play it almost every day.

IMO, the armory system kick all kinds of ass, the graphics kick ass, and I enjoy the battle system. I've played a few MMOs, not all of them, but a few. There are only two of which that I've really enjoyed enough to stick with, this one, and FFXI.

If it wasn't Final Fantasy, maybe I wouldn't have bought it, but the developpers and the game would have been free.
Sadly, the name has become a burden. Most "reasons" given by players when they don't like a FF can be reduced to "because it's different than <insert a previous FF>".
It's not rare to hear/read players praising how the serie is awesome because each episode is so new ; but actually, most can't bear this idea.

name only. i purchased the game right after release so i did do my research and seen what the reviews stated about the game. if it had had any other name besides final fantasy i wouldn't have spent my money to try it out originally. i may have checked it out on 2.0 if it was a success, but not in the original state it was in and with all the negative feedback it had.

Actually this is a better answer, I feel guilty if I don't log in for a week because I'm doing other things - if I'm not logged in my poor Miq'ote is stuck in an existential dead zone, existing only as a collection of magnetic data in a basement somewhere in one of SE server farms.

If this game wasn't made by SE (and thus not a FF title), I would never have even considered it.

If this game was made by SE, but wasn't a Final Fantasy title, I may have checked reviews to see if it was any good -- which it wasn't... so I wouldn't have picked it up.

The 'Final Fantasy' name carries considerable weight. The franchise has a history of great games, so even if it was panned in reviews, I still would give it a shot - trusting that SE would make it right.

I couldn't have cared less what the name was, the only FF games I've enjoyed were VIII, X, X-2, and XI.

The name got my attention and its legacy in addition to the improvements is what made me stay.

My answer has made me think... If Square ENIX released another FF MMORPG .. i doubt i would be playing at launch.

I think even loyal players have a bad taste in their mouths in association with this franchise now.

I didn't care about the game name and I don't now. I liked the concept of the Armory system, even if I interpreted it differently than what it ended up to be (I thought it would be more of "you are what you specialize in" instead of "you have all classes on one character) and I liked the graphics :P

I did leave for almost exactly a year after release because the game was boring and unfinished, by now it's playable but still has a long way to go. I admit I expected the game to succeed because it was SE that was making it, so the name did play a role. Though as it turned out they didn't listen to us alpha/beta-testers and screwed it up.

They are doing better with 2.0 so far but I'm not holding my breath anymore. If they manage to make 2.0 appeal to me, I'll stay, otherwise... there are other games out there. For now I will continue to ... collect Ifrit's nail clippings or craft in a dark alley.

You could say the reasons I'm still playing this are the people I'm playing with and the fact the dev team seems to genuinely want to improve the game and listens to feedback.
