So what's the solution when no friends are online then? Don't play and get further behind on your goal?

Cope with the circumstances, really. I doubt SE will change their stance on this at all. And please don't misunderstand my comment for arrogance or a personal attack, it is just that the game gets better when playing with likeminded people.
