Dual Monitor Support?

Hello,

I was thinking of getting an external USB monitor for my laptop. It would be a great place to store my chat windows so I can enjoy more of the scenery when travelling.

Is this possible with FFXIV right now?
Can I still play in 'full screen' mode?
Can I do this without the use of 3-rd party programs (windower, etc)?

Ok first, not sure what current price is for one of those but last time I checked, it was the same price for a 800x480 7" USB monitor as it is for a 22" LCD 1080P monitor. So why would you do that and waste money?

yeah get a monitor and set your laptop to not do anything when the lid closes

set up laptop display to clone

use ext kb & m close laptop and enjoy

Thank you for feedback and suggestions.

I am quite happy with my laptop (it has big 18" screen), so do not need another monitor to replace it. The keyboard is full size too, so works quite nicely!

Also, I am looking only for a small USB monitor to put next to it, as I do not have enough room for a second large monitor. I thought it was also look more pleasing to have one little side monitor dedicated to my chatting and messages, so I can clear up the Laptop monitor for just looking at the scenery.

If anyone knows if this is possible I would appreciate the feedback.

I doubt that is doable. There are only two ways I know of for getting FFXIV 1.x on multiple monitors: (1) use Eyefinity or some similar GPU technology to create one large virtual monitor out of several distinct physical monitors that can be arranged into a perfect rectangle. This could be done in fullscreen mode, but wouldn't work as the USB monitor has a lower resolution even if your GPU supports this technology. (2) Use windowed mode and manually position the monitor so that certain parts of the game window are on certain monitors. Apart from looking a bit ugly, I don't see how this would work without cutting off large portions of the game window that aren't on either of the two monitors.

In 2.0? Who knows! We may be able to use our smartphones or other external clients for some gameplay tasks, perhaps even chat. Then you could use a UI mod (which will be possible in 2.0) to remove the chat windows altogether.

Nope this sounds about right.

REDace makes good points. I get what you're trying to accomplish; small chat box would be cool to move to small monitor and have as what your chat rolls on instead of your screen. I have to agree with REDace, 99.9% sure this is NOT possible. Main reason is the chatbox is not a separate component. So the only way to move the box is expand your screen to overlap the USB monitor. If you have an 18" screen most likely you're running it in 1920x1080 so HD. The USB monitors cannot produce that type of resolution because if it COULD, it would be this small; or smaller. lol And rather difficult to read.

Awesome idea but unfortunately, not possible at this time.

I play FFXIV on a 28" monitor in windowed mode at 1920x1200 and have a second 17' monitor at 1280x1024 for notes, firefix, ect...
It can be done, but it will make you video card work harder.

And yes, there are ways to remove the window borders that do not violate the TOS.

But Amanda, it's different with your situation because you're using your 2nd monitor has most of us do. The OP wants to ONLY have their chat box there... nothing else.
