Don't call it FFxi sequel, just cuz it's the best elements

I truely think FFxiv's saving grace will be becoming more like FFxi....now just hear me out. Not identical, I didn't say that, but there were some amazing social aspects of the game that is the reason we're all praying for the success of this one and deep down alot of us just can't stop dreaming of the good ol' FFxi days!

Sure, grinding was tedious and you couldn't always find a pt, but when you did and all 6 worked together for good xp........i've played maybe 30+ mmo's and have yet to find that teamwork/synergy/bond that that experience had to offer! I played FFxi since almost launch and 4 ppl i met from all over the country including Canada are my closest friends, while i played WoW i met hundreds and hundreds of ppl and couldn't care less about 1 of them!

Sorry for how long this was and thank you for reading, but first time i ever played FFxi i stepped out of Bastok into S. Gustaberg and was just amazed at the morning sun and adventure that laid ahead, it seemed bigger than me, it was like a living breathing world. It doesn't have to be FFxi-2, but i want to seek friends just cuz it's too dangerous outside, and feel my role is important, and have my pt guide me to the camp cuz i haven't been to the zone before.....that's an experience, that's an adventure.......that's what has me praying for FFxiv to succeed cuz i miss that so much in my life from FFxi!!

So true, the community alone was FFXI best feature, this kinda community was built around the group/party play. I have been playing MMOs for more then half my life and out of all of them FFXI is the one where my friends list carried over to RL.

I went to my LS leader's wedding along with his bride's XI friends and other members from the LS. I can't think of any other time in my life that I had so much fun. We all vibed as if we knew each other since birth and we maintain that strong bond. I made plenty of friends in WoW, EQ, SWG, UO, etc and yea I might say hi on MSN every 7-10 months but nothing special is there. 60% of them i forget and will probly never remember them.

FFXI had ALOT of great features that could have served as a foundation for FFXIV to build off of. I can almost guarantee that if SE had of done this from the start then this game would never have switched teams, never been f2p for this long and ps3 release would be in stores as you read this.

There is still hope for this game but as OP said I believe the saving grace or atleast the quickest path to that promised lands lies within the world of Vana'diel.

I agree with c a good deal. I am btw one of his comrades from Ffxi. I think 14 doesn't need to be 11 but why change somethings that aren't broken. I have a great deal of hope for the party system the devs are working on for the 4 and 8 man groups. I want that sense of awe and adventure again. I get it occasionally here I just crave more call me greedy lol. So here is to hoping!

I completely agree, I'm also one of the OP's friends, and I think that 14 should have built upon the foundation that 11 set up, not tried to change everything just for the sake of change. I still remain hopeful that the instancing, parties, and new class role definitions(hopefully) will give this game what it's predecessor had.

I understand how you guys feel, EQ1 was the MMO for me, the days of getting an expansion the day it came out and finding a group to spend the day exploring the new zones making your first trip to a city, literally being in awe at the new sights and mobs. Or even sitting on a dock waiting for a boat, chatting with the other travelers. Yes it was the good days, Im sure this is how u feel about XI. I truly believe most who wasnt around for the kunark/velious expansions of eq1 dont understand what a MMO community can be about.

Unfortunately I fear these types of games have foregone these features in order to make the games easier, to appeal to the mainstream. Dont get me wrong, I really enjoy this game and look forward to seeing it grow in its own aspects, but everyone has there one game that will never be replaced. The best thing we can do is not look for something to replace ffxi/eq or we will always be disappointed

Great post Ldempsey, but my point is more than remembering the good times of an old game, it's more of 99% of the ppl playing FFxiv that were playing WoW, were playing it waiting for FFxiv to come out. So why come out with a game that is so completely unlike any other and thus practically broken, when we've all been dreaming of the graphically updated version and revised vision of the game (FFxi) that captured our hearts in the first place, and if less than 90% of the ppl on this forum agree with me....I'll eat my hat....to quote Scrooge McDuck from Ducktales....there i've dated myself lol

Well in doing so they turned the mainstream away from the game and sent them into a full on sprint in an attempt to leave this game bheind. Like I said they can build off of the good things in XI and then keep XIV its own game.

The guildleves and battle systems aswell as all the other solo content will be there for those who want things "easy". If you take a look at XI now they are building in that direction now, 8 years down the road because of a screw up from day 1. If XIV heads down the same path of trying to cater to the mainstream exclusively they'll end up having to go back years down the road given the game lasts that long to rebuild off of what XI had waiting as a template.

I'm not a fan of alot of the stuff people propose from XI but there were alot of things that shoulda been in game since Alpha to be honest.
    • Linkshell Message
    • Linkshell Control (kicking and promote/demote at any time)
    • Challenging Missions that can't be solo'd while your afk making a sandwich
    • Quests (Quests in XI were worth doing if not for great rewards it was for fame/gil prereq for mission)
    • Player Search Feature
    • Personal Map Markers

These are just a few off the top of my head that worked in XI and should have been in XIV, none of these conflicts with the current systems in game and I doubt many would disagree.

Oh and and I am not looking for a game to replace XI, because I still actively play it, I was looking for a game that could rival if not stomp XI out and set a new standard by building off of good concepts and adding tons of new ones.

figured one of my replies was relevant in here,

NOTE ***This is just copypasta from a "FFXI reminiscing" thread. Most of the posts reminisced about the earlier times in their gameplay, prior to leveling to 75.

Sorry if you've seen it before ><

Let me start off by saying I loved FFXI, and I really like FFXIV for the most part. There are too many good memories to list from 11. Now I want to say something.

I miss how great of a game 11 was. I read all these posts and noticed how so many of them were reminiscing about their adventures on the way to 75. A huge portion of our greatest memories of 11 were about our hardships and how we overcame them as low levels. This all happened before we achieved level 75. It took a damned long time to achieve endgame, there were so many things you had to do before hit cap. We will never get this back. Probably not even from future titles, and there's a reason for it.

While countless people will disagree with me, which is to be expected, I must say that this is all ruined by this new fast paced style of our new MMORPG. We'll never be able to convince the masses that half of the adventure lies in the difficulties and time required to overcome challenging obstacles. Games like this should take a very long time to reach max level. I understand people have different opinions regarding this. Some people enjoy the adventures to be had while ranking up, while others view it as nothing more than a stepping stone to get to endgame content where they believe the real adventure will start. Some will never know because they've never experienced it.

To my shocking disbelief since the game's debut, which I've now come to accept for the sole reason of futility, is this new generation of gamers' preferences. Ranging from hearing people express a dislike for 'ranking up' taking too long, (which I think is all but embarrassing at the moment. Rank 1 leve Yielding well over 1k SP per mob on 5 stars, with Guardian Aspect, and with possible linking. Meaning you can rank up with EVERY mob you kill for a few ranks, then it takes 2 mobs to rank up. And keeping in mind that you could probably go from rank 1 to rank 50 in well under 2 months,) all the way down to the cries of removals of just about all other systems and features of the game that could potentially slow people's path to 'endgame,' mixed with our lack of content for things to do before we hit max rank, we're already done.

Will we ever see a thread entitled "Your best memories of FFXIV?" possibly, but it will shy in comparison with a thread like this one. The reason why? Because this new preference of gaming just plain sucks. The quick and easy path we take to all look alike and have the same gear could arguably be fun for some people, but I think it's because they don't know any better. A silly example; If all you'd ever seen in life was an atari 2600, you'd probably like it and enjoy it. But if someone then came along and introduced you to an Xbox 360, you'd probably never want to go back to the simple machine. If you're reading this and not understanding what I'm talking about, that's my point I guess...

No need to write up a rebuttal to all of this, I get it, "timesink... somethin somethin not fun, no time, casual players etc...

Here's to wishing we can get some great memories out of the future of this game ^^
