    Help on Machinist?

After raising my Machinist to 70, I tried to play it on and off to not much success. Overheating earlier than usual, leaving skills like quick reload, rapid fire, and hot shot not being reapplied every 60 seconds. Any tips to help manage all these cooldowns as they are very overwhelming and I often lose track of what should stay applied or used as soon as the skill comes back up.

Posting a new thread here because previous post was in wrong section in my opinion.

Hey, so instead of explaining you how difficult Machinist is or linking you a guide : just play bard. The job is much simpler and better designed. You will notice how much better it is, once you play it!

    Cheers

I'm a machinist main that personally really /really/ dislikes bard gameplay.

Keep trying out rotations and openers on training dummies. Overheating early can be due to high skill speed (which current tier gear is FULL of).. You ideally don't need to hit Cooldown even once between OH Wildfires.
Every buff works in 60 seconds and you will be hitting buttons in the exact same order AS SOON as they come off cooldown during the next Wildfire, as long as you do a correct opener.
Hotshot is applied in the downtime after Gauss Barrel falls off.

There's plenty better tips and guides online but this is just the basics

https://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Bard That’s probably one of the better guides out there. It’s sad to find out how terrible mch has been treated once you hit 70. But such is life, just play bard instead tbh.

If you lose track of things being buffed and reapplied, then Bard is in no way any better. MCH is much more static in its rotation.

MCH is a really hard class to play well. Have you tried BRD? It's a much better choice overall and fills the same role in party:

    - BRD is easy to play while MCH burst requires blind muscle memory to pull of properly due how Flamethrower works.
    - BRD has more freedom with movement. No need to stand still or in melee range because of Flamethrower like MCH.
    - BRD gets better and better with gear because their DPS is tied to Critical Hit. They were already close in personal DPS and it seems like this tier they might actually pass MCH.
    - BRD can take advantage of various raid buffs with their Iron Jaws snapshots pretty much whenever they want, MCH gets absolutely ruined by their static burst schedule when raid buffs don't align or fight mechanics prevent it from happening.
    - BRD has stronger raid dps support which can be further enhanced by feeding them MP for even more Foe Requiem uptime.
    - BRD has stronger raid defensive support through Nature's Minne and Wanderer's Paean.
    - BRD is better against multiple targets due to multidotting, while MCH has very limited options for AoE damage.
    - BRD gets hurt less by latency while MCH becomes impossible to play at high ping due to reliance on double weaving and Rapid Fire weaving.
    - BRD gets unique quivers with all bows, while MCH glamour is stuck with the Gauss Barrel attachment and lunchbox.

So yeah, unless you really really wanna play MCH, I would recommend trying BRD instead. You might actually find it fun!

So, I’m honestly wondering why we’re wanting to shift this guy over to BRD when he wants to learn MCH. Mind throwing him a bone instead of just saying “just play BRD”?

Heavily reminds me of the whole “You play BLM? Play SMN instead.”

Because fixing MCH doesn't seem to be on SE's radar. Check their post history and it'll make more sense.

Basically, at this point there's little reason to be a MCH, BRD is better in almost every aspect.

Now I personally like MCH a lot, I've been trying to level BRD but it's just not my style. I don't like it at all. So MCH will remain my main side-job for the time being.

For the OP, this guide is from beginning of expac but is still valid afaik: https://www.mooglemedia.com/mch-guide/

Here's the guide that I got my start on Machinist with. I personally like the 3 ammo opener.

Partly for the reasons Whiskey said and partly because they've still crying over a community rep responding to a newb question about Battle Voice.
