It's a bug, but it works.
Not sure that's an actual bug. The patch notes said the mannequin would retain the appearance even after the item purchased off the MB. It would state "unavailable" if someone tried to purchase an already sold item.

Sounds more like it's working as intended since removing the item from the retainer is effectively the same thing as it being sold.
