Our characters are naturally inclined to hoard every useless bit of crap they find. I blame the fact that the game forces them to be homeless for so long. Giving them a "salvaged" shopping cart would help, sort of, but it would also make the problem worse in the long run because they'd just have more space to hoard more garbage. Also, it'd be a real pain to push it around in the wilderness, especially if you're playing a Ninja and that one wheel rattles when you're trying to be sneaky.
The real culprit, though, is auto-looting. It enables your character to sneak a yellow yarzon leg into a pocket, taking up an entire inventory space, when you aren't looking. And you'll only find out about it when you try to craft something and you have no room left. "Why do you even have this, Hjordis?" "I dunno, it seemed like it might be useful someday..."
She's got a chicken to ri-ide, she's got a chicken to ri-i-ide...
She's got a chicken to ride, this game's from Square!

I keep all current content things and sell/vendor off previous. Because its pretty easy I have found to get stuff from the old places than the new ones when I need it.
Though I do so wish I had WoW's crafter's bank. Its not infinite, but its quite sizeable. I don't put nearly enough stuff in it there, but here in this game I would have a ton of space used it. Currently I have 3 of the tabs full of crafting stuff on me, and I'm debating what to keep and what to toss, as I'm not crafting enough to consume it.
I'd be a lot happier and more productive in leveling crafters, if I could just craft directly from the retainer inventory instead of requiring it to be on my character. SWTOR does this (frankly the only good thing they've done) with the storage.
You can store everything in your storage, and craft with all of your characters while none of them are required to have it in their direct inventory. It pulls from shared storage, personal storage and what is on the character so you can craft and not fill your bag with components on the character.
I've been leveling my crafters recently and the amount of lvl 1-49 materials required in 60+ recipies also bothers me. I wish they'd take a scalpel to the crafting system and streamline it a bit. Make the tiers only require materials from that level, cut down on fluff materials (Ahriman wings where they don't make sense, etc.). That would help a lot with storage and gathering requirements for me.
I haven't reached end-game crafting yet, but I'm not that far off now. Just thinking about it is making me shudder.
First thing I will say is I am a hoarder. I still have some 1.x materials that never have been implemented in ARR. I still have some dated gear.
I am an end game gatherer and crafter. I have 3 retainers. For storage they are enough. I do tend to prune the WTF am I saving THAT for stuff.
But then again I know where to buy anything any NPC sells.
